YEAR:2012
Naeem was freshly 10. He celebrated his birthday by going to the water park with Hendrix, Rakim, his Mom and Dad.
That week, Naeem didn't only turn 10, but he discovered something gruesome about his father that altered his life forever. If only he stayed out the basement like his father always told him, or if his mother took him to Texas with her to visit family that week, he could've avoided everything.
But he was just a kid. Kids don't always listen, they're curious, innocent and adventurous.
A 10 year old shouldn't have to open his Dad's basement deep freezer, to see the frozen corpse of a woman.
Naeem's Dad told him to stay out the basement because he didn't want him to mess with his tools for work, he was a carpenter. But now Naeem knows it wasn't just about work.
Not even his mother went into the basement, it was like his office.
Naeem thought he got away, he thought his Dad would never know he was in the basement, but Naeem didn't know his father was a perfectionist, he notices the littlest things that were out of place.
The key to open the deep freezer lock is always between the red and yellow screwdrivers, but Naeem left it between the red and green screwdrivers.
How could his father not notice?
That night, Naeem couldn't sleep. His mind kept playing back the woman in his Dad's freezer.
His door creaked opened, frightening him, but he stayed completely still, pretending he was asleep.
"I know you're awake, Naeem."
That sent chills down his spine.
"I know you went into the basement and opened the freezer." His voice was calm.
Naeem trembled.
"Your mom can't know about this, no one can. If you told anyone, I'd have to kill you and I don't want to have to kill my own son."
Naeem sat up in bed and cried in front of him. "I- I won't tell."
"Good. You're going to be helping me from now on, put your hoodie on."
