“I don’t know, Jinki. I just don’t.” Mari murmured quietly as tears escaped her eyes.
“Mari don’t cry.” He bit his lip nervously and placed a jacket on her shoulder. She remained silent, not moving.
At first, Jinki didn’t know what to do. In his mind, he is panicking. It almost felt like he made a kid cry after just looking at him/her.
“First, let’s go to the car. Let’s sort things out, okay?” Jinki said as he tried to manage things accordingly. He wiped her tears away and gave a reassuring squeeze on the hand, taking her to the parking lot. With those actions alone, Mari cannot do anything but follow his lover. She felt security and warmness on his voice—making her feel less miserable right after—
For some reasons, Jinki has this power on Mari. He knows which words and actions perfectly. The serendipity of Jinki’s endeavor in calming her always seems to work. It was his charm after all, she thought.
“Okay now. Tell me what happened?” Jinki uttered as soon as they have settled on the car.
Mari didn’t say anything. Her pride won’t let her.
“If you don’t speak up, I wouldn’t know what’s wrong. I wouldn’t know what I could change for you to stop feeling sad. So please?” he sounded reasonable enough in the most calm manner. If there’s one trait that Jinki specialize at, it’s being calm most of the time.
“I’m sorry Jinki. I was just scared.”
“Of what? Did they harm you? Did they threaten you?” He sounded alarmed and started checking Mari if she was hurt.
“No. It wasn’t that. It’s just me.” She looked at Jinki as she stated incoherent sentences.
“Then what?” Jinki started feeling frustrated but he wasn’t shouting. He’s still waiting for her to open up.
“I felt insecure.”
“Why?”
“In case you don’t know, you were surrounded by pretty woman of SM.” She stated. “And your ex-girlfriend is one of the prettiest and kindest person I had ever met.”
Jinki chuckled lightly. ‘So, it was jealousy after all.’ He thought.
Mari covered her face in embarrassment. “I know it’s funny but you didn’t have to laugh.”
He faced his girlfriend and pinched her cheek. “I’m just glad it wasn’t anything serious, honey.”
“This is something serious, Jinki! You never told me about Luna. You never mentioned your ex-lovers to me.” She pointed out. “I mean I have to know what went wrong to avoid what happened back then. Maybe you’ll get tired of me or realize you don’t really love me.
I’m scared of losing you.”
“You won’t lose me.” He found her hands. “This time I swear it’s different because it’s you.”
“How could you say that? I mean Luna is almost perfect, I suppose.”
"You're the most perfect being I know" he beamed. “and I didn’t leave Luna.”
Mari blushed at the first statement. “She left you?”
“No.”
“Then what happened?”
“At first, we thought we were really infatuated with each other. We were close friends. Thus, we were always together since our trainee days. When SHINee started promoting, I lost contact with Luna. But we started seeing each other again when f(x) debuted.
‘Oppa, do you like me?’ she said one day while we were drinking coffee at SM’s rooftop.
‘I like you, Luna. You’re my favorite dongsaeng. Why?’ I replied.
‘I don’t know but I think I like you. Like for real.’ I got shocked with what she said but I told her that I’ll think about it.
That time, I wasn’t happy myself. There wasn’t contentment in what I was doing so I thought that dating would be able to make me happy.
During our first months, it was fine. We exchanged sweet words to each other and make each other smile. Secretly meeting was fun to be honest. But then, when I left for Japan and got separated with Luna, that’s when we both felt that it wasn’t love.
Yes, we like meeting each other and yes, we were happy but it wasn’t enough. We were just friends. When we argued we realized that we were better off friends. So we mutually agreed that we are going to start again as friends, without feeling awkward at all.”
“Then how do you know if it’s love?” she said, inquisitively.
“I don’t know. It’s inexplicable.” He shrugged. “But one thing is for sure. It’s what I feel for you.”
“For a man, you really know how to use words of flattery.”
“You love me for that.” He snorted and gained a light punch on the shoulder from Mari.
“You really know how to make me feel better.”
“That’s the least thing I could do for you.”
