Mikayla came up from the docks and over to Erin. She made a face when she realized it was Bunny they had been talking to.
"Mom, what is she doing here?"
"I don't even know."
"She's thinks it's okay to start being a parent after all these years? I don't think so. Erin, you don't need her." Kim said as she was setting up the towels.
"I wish she would just leave me alone. Camille is the only mother I need. I haven't had any contact with my father in over twenty years, other than letters. I don't even think he cares anymore. I tried writing, but they kept getting sent back. He didn't show up to my high school or college graduation, nothing."
"What do you expect from a drug addict?"
"I tried writing him a letter again when Mikayla was born. I was all excited to tell him that he was a grandfather, but nothing. He just sent the letter back. It's like he wants no part of my life."
"You don't need him. Hank is the only dad you need. He actually cared to show up to all those things."
"We should at least go over for a visit or something tonight. I'm not one to ignore an invitation." Kim said, glancing out at the lake.
"Eh, I guess. I won't like it."
"Damn it this water is cold!" Brayden yelled.
"Brayden! Where on earth did you learn to talk like that?!" Kim put her hands on her hips.
He looked embarrassed. "I heard daddy say it."
"Don't you ever talk like that again, young man! Do you hear me?"
"Yes mommy."
Around lunch time, Matt was trying to get a fire started. He was having no success at all.
"Of course." Gabby rolled her eyes, stuffing a handful of chips in her mouth.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"You're a firefighter, they're only good for putting out fires. Congratulations, you're an idiot."
Everyone started laughing.
"REAL funny, Gabby. REAL funny."
She shrugged her shoulders. "I try."
While the parents were occupied with making lunch, the kids snuck off into the woods. There was a walking trail that went about five miles out. MacKenzie was reluctant to go.
"What's the big deal? It's just a walking trail."
"We should tell our mommies and daddies where we are. They need to know." Brayden butted in with.
"Shut up." Hannah pushed him. "We're fine."
"It feels wrong." He said, trying to make a point.
"I'm just trying to have some fun. It's not like we're leaving the grounds. The trail is still camp property."
Brayden stayed behind and the girls headed to the trail. Hannah didn't look where she was walking and bumped into someone, both falling to the ground. She looked up to see Eva.
"Eva?"
"I wasn't watching where I was going, sorry."
She laughed and helped Hannah up. "It's fine, sweetie. I'm the one who should pay more attention."
"Is Diego here, too?"
"Yeah. Our campsite is C17 if you want to drop by and say hi."
"Ours is the multi family site, B24." MacKenzie said.
Kim checked the kids' tents, the playground and the pool. "Crap."
"What?" Adam looked away from the fire.
"Where are the kids?"
"Did you check the tents?"
"Yeah."
"The pool?"
"Yeah."
"What about the playground?"
"I checked there too. They're not anywhere."
"I'll go look for them. You stay here."
He got up and walked all around the grounds, no sign of the kids. That was, until he noticed imprints in the mud that lead to the walking trail. He walked about two miles down the trail when he spotted them sitting there. He walked up behind them and cleared his throat.
"What do you guys think you're doing?"
Brayden ran behind Adam, hoping he hadn't seen him. "Daddy, I had no part in this."
He picked him up. "You guys aren't in trouble."
"Uh oh..." MacKenzie poked Hannah to get her attention and they saw Adam.
They started backing up.
"You guys aren't in trouble. I just came to let you know lunch is ready."
"I am kinda hungry. I don't feel like walking back though." She held her arms up to Adam.
"Oh alright." He picked her up.
When they were a mile from the campsite, a blood curdling scream could be heard.
"What was that?" Mikayla asked as she looked around.
"I don't know, but you guys get back to the site. I'm gonna go find out."
He set the kids down and took off running further down the trail. He looked all around and saw nothing. He ran further and the scream became louder, which meant he was getting closer. At last, he saw a brightly colored shirt in the bushes. He shoveled through them and found a half naked woman, her lip bloody. When she saw Adam, she tried covering herself and backing up.
"Don't be afraid, I'm a police officer."
"Prove it." She said in a whimpering tone.
He showed her his badge. "See? You have nothing to be afraid of. What happened?"
"I go for a run every day on this trail. He must've come up from behind me."
"Who?"
"A man."
"Could you give me some more details?"
"He was about six feet tall. Blue eyes, I think brown hair. He had a tattoo high up on his left arm."
"Did you notice the color of his skin?"
"I think he was white, maybe Hispanic."
"What did he do to you?"
"He shoved me into the bushes and...he...raped me. He said if I screamed, he would kill me."
"Wait a minute...Nadia?"
"Yeah."
"I'm sorry I didn't recognize you sooner."
"I'm not too caught up with that. Go catch him."
"Which way did he go?"
She pointed toward the opposite end of the trail.
"Here, cover up with this." He handed her his sweatshirt. "Are you sure you're fine?"
"I'm fine."
"Here's my campsite number. Go there, grab something to eat, get warm." He scribbled the number down on paper and helped her to the site. After making sure she was okay, he ran towards the direction of the man. He found a man leaning against a tree, smoking a cigarette. His hands were blood covered, which lead that he might be Nadia's attacker.
"Can I help you, sir?" The man asked.
"How'd you get that blood on your hands?"
"Eh, got in a scrape with some buddies. We scuffled a bit, not to worry."
"Not to worry, huh? Then where are your buddies?"
The guy dropped the cigarette and took off running.
