It was evening time and Nicole was watching a movie with me while she talked about her sleepover. She went over just about every detail making me bored out of my mind. I adore her but preteen talk can only be interesting for so long.
"And so that's when we fell asleep!" She stated proudly.
"Woww, sounds like you guys stayed up real late. You better not tell Dad." I laughed.
"So it's just us two for dinner, any suggestions?"
"More Frozen pizza pleaseee!"
"That's easyyy, we have lots" I smiled.
I heard a weird noise that made me put the volume down on the tv. It was coming from the front door as if someone was outside it. Our house was isolated so we don't have any neighbors but it was pretty open for just about anyone who knew the address.
The lock jingled again but not in a "I have the keys sort of way". It was more like a "I'm trying to break in effectively".This was when I began to realize that we had no security camera, tall gates, or anything protective. Usually, we had no issues.
To say the least, I was extremely startled and had a bad feeling about the noises.
I instinctively picked Nicole up causing her to shake a bit in fear. I set her down realizing my foot's condition then told her to go into the guest room.
"You go in there and stay quiet baby. Don't come out for anyone. Shhh" I cooed, as the front door finally sounded like it was opening a bit.She hyperventilated a bit as she ran away to hide. I looked around to see where I put my goddamn phone. Cmon where did I fucking leave it??
I noticed it on the floor and snatched it up victoriously.
I crawled closer to the guest room and then got inside as soon as the front door busted open. I closed the door instantly behind me.
I sat behind the now locked door, putting a finger over my lips so Nicole could see. The footsteps we heard were heavy and slow. It sounded like there were two sets of feet but I could only hear one set clearly. They were slowly stepping as they went about rather than being quick which was terrifying. Nicole was shaking beside me in fear as tears fell down her face.
"It's okay. it's okay. Listen, I need you to go into the bathroom right there and lock the door. Just in case they try to come in here." I whispered softly. I was trying to be calm for Nicole's sake but I was petrified.
"But... what about you?"
The footsteps stopped abruptly as if this person was facing the guest door.
Fuck. I tried to calm down and quickly dial 911 but soon enough the guest bedroom lock was being jiggled.
"Please help us. we're at the Athello mansion on wickory lane. Someone broke in-"
Soon enough, they started banging on the door like a maniac which made Nicole cling onto me.
"I'm scared Diya!" she cried aloud.
"Help is on the way"
I disassociated as I held her tightly. I had no idea how to protect her if they got in. The intruders went silent, making me anxious.
God I hope the police get here quick.
