The locks of Claire's door unfastened before it swung open. She stared into the dark house then flipped a switch close to her which illuminated the room with light.
Her eyes leaped on the items that lay bare and also the familiar mess she had left behind.
She beamed.
Home sweet home.
Claire swung the door shut with her feet which caused an echo throughout the house. With a sigh, she trudged further into her living room then crashed on a sofa.
Once her body made contact with it, a thick cloud of dust escaped from within the sofa which made her cough in irritation.
She exhaled after her coughing fit then raised her left leg and propped it on her right. She took her shoe off her feet and slowly kneaded her heel.
"You'd think the Good Samaritan would help with a ride too" She said with a groan while she continued to tend to her heel.
Claire didn't have any money on her which meant she couldn't take a cab home. So, she had to walk all the from the prison and back home. She didn't mind it though, as she got to feast her eyes on a ton of sights while headed back. She hadn't been in the outside world for a while, so, something's struck as new to her.
She turned to her wall clock which was surprisingly still working and groaned.
5:23pm.
If she didn't get up and clean the apartment, she was going to have to end up sleeping with the house being so unkempt. And, she wasn't going to allow her first nap back home be shit after she had just spent years sleeping on a rock like bed.
She stood to her feet then got to work.
She first started off with the living room, then the kitchen, and then her bedroom. It was hectic (and dusty) but after an hour and thirty minutes, Claire stared at a tidy and shiny apartment.
"There we go" She said as she stared gracefully at her handwork. The grumble of her stomach turned her attention from the beauty of her house to her abdomen with a sigh.
"I wonder what I could cook" She walked into the kitchen and began to scan through her drawer. After a couple seconds of exploring, she decided on instant noodles which had expired but Claire was too hungry to consider the risks.
She whipped it up quickly, walked back into the living room, then turned the TV on. She scrolled through channels until she found something suitable to watch then glued herself to it while she slurped down her noodles. which to Claire's surprise, didn't taste quite as bad despite it being expired.
An hour into the movie she was watching, Claire yawned tiredly and sighed. Her eyes became droopy and heavy. In retaliation to not wanting to get knocked out early, Claire tried to focus even harder on the screen, in hopes that the light would pierce into her iris and eliminate the drowsiness completely. But unfortunately, it didn't work, and surprisingly made her eyes feel even heavier.
With a tired sigh, she turned off the TV, stood to her feet, walked into the kitchen, tossed the instant noodle bag, then marched into her room. Once she got in, she undressed herself then got into the shower, allowing the cold water to run down her body.
Once she finished, Claire draped herself in much cleaner clothing, snuggled into her comforter, and let out a satisfied sigh as warmth filled her body
A toothy grin formed on her face as she could assure herself she was about to have one of the best naps she has had in a while.
With her eyes to the ceiling, Claire began to think of how differently her life would be now. She was no longer caged by the four walls of the prison. She was no longer a convict but a free citizen again. So, she needed to do better for herself.
Way better than her previous life.
She sighed, turned to her right, then slid further into the comforter with a small smile. Her mind suddenly recollected her empty kitchen and she muttered about how she needed to get a new job with a sigh.
"That's work for tomorrow, though. Now..." She yawned and stretched "I need sleep"
She snuggled further into the duvet and within a few minutes, had dozed off.
