Fist Fight

As much as I enjoyed being friends with Patrick, Henry, Vic, and Belch, I tried to keep them at arm's length friends. I don't love the idea of getting too close to anyone and letting something slip. I can't afford for anyone to really know anything about me. I won't deny it however, having someone to talk to every now and then wasn't terrible.

Naturally, I'm closer to Patrick than the rest of them. I mean, I live with him and he went through all of my stuff after all. Not even mentioning the other close moments we've had together.

I looked over to him as he messed around with Vic, laughing and smiling. I couldn't help but smile too, not just at the fact that he had Vic in another headlock, but also just at him. Sure he has some issues, like a fridge full of dead animals and his perverted tendencies, but aside from those, there was something alluring about him. I could tell that behind it all there was something else going on; I just couldn't figure it out.

The feedback of the overhead speaker snapped me out of my thoughts. I never actually listen to the announcements but today something in particular grabbed my attention.

"Good morning students and staff! Today we have some exciting news but first let's start with our pledge"

I rolled my eyes, it's the same thing everyday. Nothing ever new or exciting actually happened in this town.

"We've decided to do something new this year and therefore this Friday will be the last dance of the year! All students will be allowed to attend."

The loudspeaker cut out and the hall bursted with excited chatter. Everyone was now talking about this short noticed dance. I looked around the hall thoughtfully, although I wasn't sure why. I've never really thought much about attending a school dance. This would be my first one in my two years of highschool. Did I even want to go?

"Ridiculous," I heard Henry scowl, "Who would want to go to a dumb school dance?"

I looked back over to them and caught Patrick's eyes. He quickly broke eye contact and looked away.

"Would it really be that bad? I mean, we could spike the drinks" Belch tried to reason with Henry. I shook my head and laughed at them.

"Um excuse me?" I heard an unfamiliar, quiet voice.

I looked down to see a light haired girl, her face dotted with freckles, eyes hazel, and cheeks pink. She was short, maybe only 5'2? All of our attention turned toward her and that seemed to frighten her a bit.

"Could I- could I um, talk with you," She stuttered, cheeks getting pinker, "Privately?"

I looked back at the boys, they all gave me confused looks but Patrick seemed to be glaring at the girl. I turned back towards her, giving her a nod.

"Lead the way" I gestured.

I walked besides her, once again noticing our height difference. She seemed shy and reserved but I could tell she was the type to let loose around her friends, she had that bubbly kind of aura.

"So what is it that you wanted to walk about?" I asked blatantly. She let out a soft squeak of some sorts before taking in a deep breath.

"Well I um- I wanted to," She seemed at a loss for words. She stopped walking and faced me, taking another breath.

"My name is Adeline, my friends call me Addy, and um, well I've always kinda thought you were pretty cute and well, I've kinda had a little crush on you for awhile now and I was wondering if maybe you would want to go to the dance with me this Friday?" She suddenly sputtered out.

Her cheeks went red. She was cute, there was no denying that but this was sudden and I still had no idea if I even wanted to go. I looked at her for a minute before making my decision.

"I think I would really enjoy that" I smiled at her.

It's not that I said yes to make her happy but I wanted the experience of knowing what a school dance was like. I had no interest before but something sparked my curiosity this time. She squealed with excitement before quickly hugging me and running off to her first class.

If I had known that saying yes to Adeline was going to get me punched in the face, I would've prepared sooner. I sat in my first period history, zoning out to the teacher's monotone voice. Finally the bell rang and we were excused. I didn't care for that "the bell doesn't dismiss you" bullshit. Before I can even make it to my locker, I'm getting a fist thrown across my face.

"What the fuck?" I spat, holding my jaw.

It was some guy I never cared to notice before. Before he could give me the dumbest reason ever, I threw a right hook. I could've maybe walked away from this fight but, y'know what, who cares? Not me. He recoverd quickly from my punch and tackled me into the lockers. Pain went up and down my spine. I elbowed down into his shoulder, causing him to let go. I grabbed his hair and brought my knee up to his face.

"Back off" I hissed as I dropped him.

I turned to walk away but before I could go much further than two steps, I was being tackled to the ground. My face hit the floor hard but nothing broke, thankfully. I turned around to punch his face again. I made contact and took the opportunity to shift my weight to get on top of him. I started laying my punches thick.

"I told you to back off!" I shouted as I grabbed his collar pulling upwards tightly.

I heard yelling from outside the small circle of student but I ignored it. Anger flooded my veins, I was done with being fucked with.

"HEY! BREAK IT UP, GET OFF!" The principal's voice boomed.

He peeled me off the bloodied kid, ripping his collar from my hands. The kid quickly scampered up, gasping for air.

"What the hell is going on?" He demanded answers.

"HE'S TRYING TO KILL ME!" The boy accused. I gritted my teeth, anger still fumed from me.

"If I was trying to kill you, you'd already be dead," I spat, "Besides, he threw the first punch."

"Sure as hell he did! You caused way more damage to him!" The principal scoffed.

"That's bullshit! He hit me first! It's not my fault he can't handle the punches!" I yelled.

"You were choking me!" The boy cried out.

"Shut up" I growled.

"I will see you in detention, Mr. [L/n]" The principal said, sounding done with life.

"This is bullshit" I muttered to myself as everyone began to clear out.
