Just then, a yowl erupted from the TallRock. It was TawnyStar, calling a clan meeting.

Foxkit skidded over just as TawnyStar started speaking.

"There has been a fire in our territory. Luckily, the dawn patrol had seen it and warned us, but a lot of the ground was burned, and most of the prey fled. It died down once it reached the river.

We are unsure how this happened but it may have been caused by a lightning strike." Murmurs emerged in reply to the last sentence.
"Sometimes thunderstorms do happen in Green-leaf, it's not uncommon. Sometimes when the air gets very sticky, the storms are great." RavenClaw spoke

TawnyStar nodded in agreement. "In other news, the river that killed Dirtpaw now has barriers around it, so a similar accident does not happen."

Foxkit glanced at the two apprentices, Dawn and Frostpaw, who were Dirtpaw's littermates. She felt pity for them, death ceremony wasn't long ago and it must have be hard to lose someone you were close to, especially a littermate.

"Now," TawnyStar was saying, "We must be vigilant. Who knows if another storm starts, and the prey will take a while to come back. We're going to need extra hunting patrols to make up for the loss." TawnyStar flicked her tail towards the medicine cat, BerryFrost, "Were there any herbs that grew over there that will be hard to get now?"

BerryFrost nodded."There was lots of feverfew and yarrow growing there, and it was the only place I knew of that had horsetail."

"Alright. WillowFur, would it be okay if you take a few cats to look for those herbs? I know it's Greenleaf but we must be prepared."

"Yes TawnyStar" the medicine cat apprentice replied.

Herbs? Foxkit thought. Perhaps I could help with that! After all, it's just finding plants, and I like plants.

"Alright. Clan meeting dismissed" TawnyStar yowled

Now's my chance. Foxkit dodged the cats getting up to leave "I should ask Willowfur what the herbs look like, she's much nicer than BerryFrost"

"Hey WillowFur! Are you going to go find those herbs?"

"Yes I am, Foxkit, I'm going with IvyFlight and I can't take long."

"Oh that's cool, I was just wondering, do they all look like flowers? I know there's plenty of flowers at camp!"
"No silly! While Yarrow has these white flowers, and feverfew is a bush with flowers, horsetail is tall and spiky"

Foxkit's tail twitched excitedly. That seemed easy enough. She quickly thanked WillowFur and sprinted away, back to the nursery. DaisyPebble was awake, licking her lips.
"Foxkit, there you are, I was starting to get worried, here" She nudged a half-eaten blackbird towards her.

"TallRock's not so far from the nursery, be quicker next time."

Foxkit resisted rolling her eyes. "Yes DaisyPebble, I will."

She kneeled down to take a bite of the blackbird. Foxkit was glad for it, she had been hungry all morning. She ate it slowly, savouring the taste. I want to be able to catch prey this good. I could catch the biggest, plumpest prey with the right training, and the right mentor. Foxkit paused for a moment. What if she got a bad mentor? What if she got IvyFlight, who had only become a warrior a couple moons back. Or AshHeart, a strange warrior who never really spoke much.

No. TawnyStar wouldn't do that, I trust her. Anyway, Foxkit had other things to focus on. How would she sneak out of camp? Obviously it would have to be at night, but from where? She couldn't just go from the front, it was too open, but she was small enough to slip through some of the brambles, if she found a hole big enough. Going through the nursery wouldn't work, Blossomkit gets woken up pretty easily after all, but maybe if she went through the dirt place tree and out she might be able to leave undetected. Of course, there was the issue of the unknown territory as well as clan borders, but Foxkit figured that if she stayed relatively close to camp, she'd be ok.
"Foxkit! Why are you eating so slow? Do you not like it? You usually love blackbirds! Are you feeling ill?"

"No DaisyPebble. I'm simply savouring the taste."

DaisyPebble nodded, satisfied with her answer, "Well be careful not to savour too long, or it'll get too cold. Come here"
She gestured to Foxkit with her tail. Foxkit moved closer, snuggling in her mother's long, warm fur.
"I must admit, I will be sad when you move onto the apprentice den, but I know you'll be a great apprentice, so that doesn't matter. But will you promise to visit your mother in the nursery every once in a while?"

"Yes, of course! I'll visit at least every quarter moon!"

"Thank you, my dear"
Foxkit closed her eyes, listening to the heartbeat of her mother, in close synchronisation of her own. In the distance, she could hear the river near the camp, occasionally lapping at the walls. Slowly, she fell asleep.
