"Quick" backstory: Josef had grown up in post world war 1 and depression era Germany. His family had a small farm outside of Cologne but had struggled immensely, especially since Josef's father, Friedrich, had lost his leg during the war. Josef was only 13-14 when Hitler rose to power. He was quickly indoctrinated into the Hitler youth, and endured the hard ships of it. As he grew older, he began to grow detached from his family, and at 17 he ran away from home. He would be on the run for 5 years, watching as the Nazi war machine carved its path across all of Europe. In 1942, he was arrested by the Gestapo in Austria, and was forcibly conscripted into a penal battalion. However, he proved rather effective in mock combat scenarios, and was quickly transferred to a real infantry division. In 1943 he was sent to Italy, were he would meet plenty of Veterans from France, Greece, and even North Africa. He was told that the Allies were foolish, that they were fighting a loosing war. Yeah, because fools attack you in the dead of night by dropping paratroopers on top of you. Josef would be injured during Operation Husky, and would be sent back to Germany to spend 6 months in recovery. During recovery, he found that both his father and brother had died. His father had succumbed to tuberculosis, and his brother had been sent to the eastern front with the Waffen SS. He had been captured by the Soviets during The Battle of Kursk, and he had been sentenced to summary execution, before being dumped in a mass grave in a marsh. In 1944, Josef would be reassigned to France, after his unit was completely encircled by the US Army's 2nd Armored Division. Josef would spend most of his time in Paris, up until late August if 1944, when the Americans and French resistance would liberate Paris. Josef would once again be wounded, however this time he didn't get any extended medical leave. In winter of 1944, Josef's unit would skirmish with a small platoon of American GI's. The Americans quickly surrendered, but, unable to process that many POW's, Josef and his men would execute the Americans instead. Josef can still remember the face of the young man he shot. In early January of 1945, Josef received a letter from civil authorities. His mother had commit suicide right around Christmas of 1944. It is now March of 1945. Most men who serve with Josef have described him as a husk. They claim there is no longer a man inside, only a shell roaming around with a rifle.
