grover was a traitor.
percy didn't expect that her best friend, her brother from another mother and father, a king to her queen, the enchilada to her chips and dips, his goat boy to her seaweed brain, would turn out to be a traitor worse than the luk-
well, let's not exaggerate.
when percy called grover via iris message she didn't expect that grover after five minutes of conversation (actually fifteen, because for the five minutes they tried to perform their handshake in a distance and for the next five grover cried over the fact that percy wouldn't come) would commit the crime.
grover shouted for annabeth.
what was worse was that annabeth.... annebeth came.
percy immediately wanted to end the conversation, but then sally appeared in the doorway. neither grover nor annabeth could see her, but percy did. sally stared blankly at her daughter. when she noticed that percy was staring at her she ran a finger over her throat and pointed at percy, who swallowed nervously.
now that her mother was threatening her, she couldn't hang up. she returned her gaze to annabeth, who stared at her worriedly. when sally left, percy focused all her attention on her ex-girlfriend, wishing she could just sink to the ground and die.
"so..." annabeth started the conversation visibly swinging on her feet. "you're not coming to camp this year, are you?"
percy couldn't handle hearing her voice.
she felt an overwhelming pain in her chest. tears slowly gathered in her eyes. she was sure that her face said it all.
she didn't want to talk to her.
she didn't want to see her right now. so much.
percy somewhat loathed herself for it. annabeth was her first girl friend, right after sally, and then her first love. the thought of them not being together anymore only caused her more suffering.
but she knew that annabeth had the right to break up with her.
daughter of athena told her that she couldn't be with her because she wanted to focus on herself and her development. but percy was sure that there were other reasons to it.
the first one was luke.
he was her idol, her best friend, her first crush. this whole time she thought she could get him on the right track and at the end of his life she was sure she succeeded. percy knew that annabeth was still processing his death, even though it had been almost a year, so she never pointed out that he was a traitor, the first one to start this war.
if she only had said that to percy, of course she would have given her as much space as she needed. and if that wasn't what she wanted, if she wanted percy to support her, she would have been there for her and helped as much as she could.
and here comes the second thing.
percy was afraid that annabeth broke up with her because she was simply... afraid of her.
percy didn't tell this anyone. not grover, not sally, or even annabeth. but subconsciously she felt that annabeth might have started to fear her during the war.
