My eyes flutter open, and I look around my room. Everything seems normal, but I feel like something's wrong, nonetheless.
"Ethan? Chase, Lisa?" I hiss, wildly whipping my head around. I see Chase poke his head around my door, "What is it, Honey? What's wrong?" he asks.
Ethan and Lisa follow him in. Breathing heavily, I sit up, my gray fleece blanket falling off me as I do so. I look at them, frowning, "I feel like something's wrong." I whisper, scanning my room again.
I see the rest do the same, but feel disappointed when Ethan shakes his head, "Nope, sorry, mam. I don't see anything to be suspicious of." he says in an English accent. Basically, if he calls me 'mam,'
then he's doing an English accent. Just a little What Accent Is Ethan Doing? tip for ya. More to come, my friends. Look forward to them, they should help.
I glare at him, "I can see that, genius. And that's enough with the foreign accents!" I groaned in exasperation.
Chase shrugs, "Well, I happen to notice that you're still in your pajamas. Why don't we leave so you can get dressed?" he suggests.
"Okay, out." I mutter, closing the door as they leave.
I put on my usual attire, the same that I described in chapter one, and join Ethan, Chase, and Lisa at the table downstairs.
Lisa looks up at me almost instantly, "What took so long? We might be late now." she whines.
Rolling my eyes, I sit down next to Chase. We high five for whatever reason, that's what we always do at breakfast.
I start on my chocolate chip pancakes hungrily. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Chase eye Lisa, "Hey, Lis, we aren't gonna be late. We're on track to being early. Early, I tell you! And to be honest, Hon didn't take that long." he informs her mildly.
I glance at him gratefully. "No problem." he whispers in my ear. I look at Lisa. Luckily, she doesn't seem upset. Her and Ethan are pretty close, too, so she probably understands Chase's motives.
I quickly finish my pancakes and get up, "Come on, guys! Let's go." I exclaim. Not waiting for an answer, I run to the front door.
When I get there, I pull on some sneakers and slip on my leather jacket and backpack.
After about five minutes, Ethan joins me, a frown on his face. He's followed closely by Chase and Lisa.
They also put on shoes, Ethan has black sneakers, Chase has white sneakers, and Lisa has short, brown boots. They grab their backpacks and we go outside to wait for the bus.
My head shoots up as the bell for lunch rings. Behind me, Mark groans and covers his ears. Maybe enhanced senses aren't as fun as they seem.
Our teacher, Mr. Haddock looks up from the math tests he's grading. "Okay, class. You can go to lunch now." he says boredly. As I get up, I hear him add under his breath, "Oh, thank goodness."
Not too sure that he likes his job all that much.
All the kids rush to the cafeteria.
I sit down at the table we always sit at. I'm quickly joined by Ethan, Flicker, Sammy, Chase, Lisa, Harmony, Stacy, and Ashleigh.
I see Chase slightly blushing. What's going on?
He looks around. I follow his gaze. The whole school's here, so there's no way of telling what he's looking for. Lisa seems to know. She whispers something in Chase's ear, and he glares at her.
Chase stands up and shouts, "Yikes!"
What the heck is going on?
Then something even weirder happens. Chase waves his arms and purposely runs into the wall ten times. What?
The whole cafeteria fills with laughter as Chase unpeels himself from the wall for the tenth time. He walks back to our table dizzily. Sitting down and glaring at Lisa again, he mutters, "There. I did it. You didn't have to make me yell yikes, though. That just made me look even more stupid."
Oh, now it makes sense. Chase and Lisa must've been playing truth or dare at some point. Probably yesterday, but there's no way to be sure. Unless, of course, he tells me.
Lisa giggles and looks away. "Hey, a dare is a dare. And you said dare." she points out.
I take a drink of my milk, trying not to laugh. I look up and see Clayton, the vainest, most popular boy in school, strutting across the cafeteria. He looks around and waves at everyone.
He walks forward and . . .
Slips on a banana peel. The eating crowd roars with laughter as he flips around in the air before he lands flat on his back. Clayton turns red as a beetroot and rushes out of the room.
Ethan grins at Chase, "Hey, now the crowd is focusing on him,"— he jabs a thumb at the door that Clayton ran through—" instead of you. Gotta be grateful for that, eh?" he chuckles.
Chase looks up and nods. Lisa pats him on the back, "Oh, come on! Have some fun now and then, would ya?" she exclaims.
Chase smiles at her and pushes her playfully.
Flicker rolls his eyes, "Why are you guys so corny?" he asks, directed at Chase and Lisa. The two younger kids exchange a glance; then Chase turns to Flicker, who's across from them. "Because . . . we like corn?" he offers, confused. "Ah, what can I say? We have no idea what corny means."
Flicker's eyes widen, and he raises one eyebrow. "You guys really don't know?" he asks as if everyone should. Chase nods, "Yes. What does corny mean?" he asks eagerly.
Flicker pulls out his phone. How he managed to get a phone in this school remains a mystery. See, our school doesn't allow phones for whatever reason. "Here, let me look it up on Dictionary." he mutters, typing something in. When he finishes, he nods triumphantly and reads aloud, "Old-fashioned, trite, or lacking in subtlety. Does that answer your question?"
Chase nods slowly, "Sort of. I guess." he murmurs.
I smirk at him. Honestly, Chase is just so funny sometimes. Take now for example.
Ethan gets up and moves to my side. Leaning towards my ear, he whispers, "Should we go back to the computer place again tonight?"
I glare at him, faintly aware of everyone giving us curious glances, "Err, how should I know? You're the detective expert, are you not?" I breathe in reply.
Surprise lights up his face, but he quickly hides it, "Yeah, I am. Let's go. Meet me at the park. Bring Chase." he plans silently.
I nod, and he returns to his seat. It isn't until he sits back down, that I realize that he hadn't said a time, and wonder why he had said to bring Chase.
Okay, I'm still working on chapter ten, and I currently have writer's block, so it may take me a while. Thank you guys for being so patient and awesome. Please let me know if you have ideas for this book or any others. I love you all.
