Hearts Desire Chapter 2
Kagome stood on the edge of the bone eaters well, staring down into the depths of darkness. It felt almost like it was watching her intently in return, sending a chill down her spine. She didn't even know if she could return home since the Shikon no Tama had been destroyed. She wasn't sure if she really wanted too.
By now, the others would have noticed she left and would have started looking for her. Kagome had to quickly make her decision. Since the jewel was gone, no one was sure if it had anything to do with her ability to jump time. One thing she was sure about was that if Inuyasha didn't want her, she couldn't stay.
All around her, it seemed as if time stood still. Snapping out of her thoughts, the wind and birds seemed to go silent. Realizing she wasn't alone, she quickly turned to get down but bumped into something behind her, sending her straight down to the ground. Was this it? After fighting relentlessly for 3 years, was this how she went? Never to see her family again? She braced for impact, tightly closing her eyes.
"No! Kagome!" She heard a very familiar, young voice call out.
She hit the ground. Hard. Not enough to kill her but enough to knock the wind out of her. After finally filling her burning lungs with air, she quickly grabbed the back of her head. Opening her eyes, three sets of eyes stared back. One set not showing the slightest hint of sympathy.
"Rin, what are you guys doing here?" Kagome asked, sitting up, knowing she was going to bruise. The little green imp crossed his arms. "That's not of your business human!" Jaken scoffed in his usual, over dramatic screech.
"Lord Sesshomaru!" Rin shouted in a very accusing tone. "You just bumped into Kagome and didn't bother catching her so she didn't get hurt! That wasn't very nice of you."
Sesshomaru turned his nose in the air. "If she died from that fall then she's too weak." He said, beginning to walk away from the scene of the crime. "Rin! Don't accuse our Lord of making a mistake! He doesn't make mistakes! He's our Lord and perfect in every way, unlike those vile humans." Jaken shouted, ensuing an argument between the two. Kagome stood up, wiping the dirt off of her the best she could, gritting her teeth.
Not only was Inuyasha rude, impolite, unsympathetic and impulsive but she now had to deal with his older brother being a dick? "Sesshomaru!," Kagome yelled in a tone that made both Rin and Jaken freeze. Sesshomaru stopped walking but didn't turn to recognize her even speaking. Her blood was boiling. She wasn't going to do it anymore. "You need to get back here and apologize right now if it was an accident. There's no way you didn't see me standing on the edge of the well." She demanded as if she were speaking to a child.
"I don't take kindly to those who THINK they're superior to me." He said, showing a slight amount of irritation. Within a flash, he was a mere couple feet away from Kagome. "I think you owe ME an apology for speaking out of place, I'll decide your punishment."
For the first time ever, she blew up. Never had she felt so angry at pure ignorance. "There was a time you used to intimidate me," She grinned, "Now is not the time. For years you've done nothing but bitch about how lowly your brother is and everyone who isn't you but the funny thing is, you're ALOT like your brother. You're a demon that can live for thousands of years, but apparently you're not that much superior when you don't know common manners or even live 500 years from now in my time so someone is obviously far superior to you to have killed you." She said, seething.
Sesshomaru raised his hand, baring his claws. "Your insolence will pay!" He shouted, jumping towards her. Quickly, she brought up her hands, glowing a bright lilac. Sesshomaru jumped back knowing if she touched him, it could be fatal. Purifying a demon was never a pretty sight.
Miroku, Sango and Shippos voices could be faintly heard yelling her name in the forest. Turning her head in the direction of their voices, she sighed. Moments later, Inuyashas voice followed and panick spread across her face.
"I'm surprised you finally figured out that you never meant anything to Inuyasha other than to find what he needed." Sesshomaru said, realizing what was going on. "He was a fool for falling in love with that priestess, but once our kind marks their mate, it's for life. No one can ever take their place. He's going to live his life, desperately wanting to feel something, hurting himself and whomever else in the process because he won't be able to return the feeling." He said, turning away, walking into the forest.
"Marks their mate for life?" Kagome repeated, sheer terror in her voice. She had to catch herself on the well so she didn't collapse. It felt like her heart dropped into her stomach. All of the times Inuyasha dropped whatever he was doing to dart off to Kikyo. All of the times he left her side to move mountains to get to Kikyo. It made sense. She had to leave and now. There was no turning back. Quickly, she tossed her backpack into the well and jumped in with it. She sat holding her knees, her eyes closed tight. The tears wouldn't stop. Not only did she take her anger out on Sesshomaru, she risked her life to antagonize him. In return, he told her the cold hard truth. Kagome didn't have any reason to not believe Sesshomaru, he found it beneath him to lie.
She was too afraid to look and see if she had made it back home or not. It was quiet. Staying in the quiet darkness was comforting.
"Kagome!" Sango's voice rang down the well. "What are you doing down there?" Miroku's voice followed after.
No. She was still in the feudal era. The well didn't work. She had no way to get away. She lifted her tear-streaked face to look up to the two. Shippo popped up on the ledge of the well to look down. "Kagome, you're crying! Are you okay? Did you get hurt?"Shippo yelled down, starting to panick.
She just sat there, hugging herself, frozen. It was like she couldn't make her mouth move. "Kagomeeeee!" Inuyasha yelled from above. As if it were slow motion, she saw his hands grab onto the ledge of the well and his amber eyes bore down to her. "No." She said quietly, her heart pounding heavy in her chest. "I'm coming down to get you so watch out Kagome." Inuyasha yelled.
Badly, she wanted to feel him against her one more time. To feel his warmth. To hold his hands. But it was all a facade. He could never truly love her. "No." She managed to speak louder this time. She couldn't bare the thought of rejection. "What are you blabbering down there." Inuyasha mumbled, standing up on the ledge, ready to jump down.
"NOOOOOOO!" Kagome screamed to the top of her lungs with everything she could muster. Making eye contact with Inuyasha as he began to fade, a look of horror struck his face. She was terrified and it was him that scared her....
