Thank you for making it to the end of this tale. While no one guessed the story that I've loosely based this novella on, I can hardly blame them. The author is no superstar despite being highly respected. Their work is extremely esoteric and post-modern, which is why I especially detested reading it. But while writing this work and rereading it, I've developed a reluctant appreciation for it.
This is the answer to the question no one could answer: The Body Artist by Don Delillo.
There's a movie on Netflix based on his book White Noise.
The next book and author will be easier to guess. I promise.
