I walked slowly back to my house. I had two rabbits in my game bag, caught by the twitch up snares she had set in the woods of District 5. Technically, it was illegal to hunt in those woods, but there was no other way for me to get food and so I hunted. Mainly small animals and birds, every now and then I brought down a deer with my sling. But that was rough, especially since you had to hit the head to kill it or even bring it down. Anywhere else, and bye-bye deer. My house however was on the outskirts of District 5, so the peacekeepers -basically the police- pretty much ignored my part of the village. I walked down an alley and came to a fence, after going farther down a way, I came to the fence that separated us from the rest of the District, opened it, and went in. I walked up to the nearest house -mine- and opened the door, and stepped over the threshold and then was immediately tackled.

"Isi!" exclaimed Claudia, my 12-year-old sister, with her strawberry blond hair going off in different directions. "You're back!" She always did this when I came home, even though I had been hunting for 7 years now, ever since Claudia and I's dad died. Our mom wasn't around; she hadn't been accepted by the power plant to continue working and we didn't know where she was now. We only knew that she wasn't dead, seeing as we would have been the first to be notified if she had passed away, being her family. Also, if she did die, I would be forced to work at the powerplant and then live in the home. No peacekeepers had come with a notice, so, so far, we were safe.

"Hey, sis." I said, rubbing Claudia's back, and then releasing her. "How about we have a potato for dinner?"

Claudia's eyes widened. "A real one?"

No, Mr. Potato Head lent us one of his children. I thought. Out loud, I just said. "Yeah, a real one. How cool is that?"

"So cool!" said Claudia. bouncing around. She was always energetic, something that we needed in this District.

I smiled at her and went over to the kitchen counter which was short and narrow. I set the gamebag down on the counter and went over to the cupboard where the food that lasted longer was kept. The one good thing about always having to hunt is that everything you eat is fresh. The house was small, even for the poor side of District 5. When you first walked in you were immediately in the kitchen and living which were in the same room. The kitchen had a table in the middle of it and a small counter. There was also a sink with a window above it, and a window box in front of it, which had poppies, my favorite flower in it. The next room had two beds in the middle and only a few racks to hang clothes on. Not that we had enough clothes to hang on more racks even if we had them.
