I finished scribbling in my book and admired my work, rolling up the sleeves of my huge sweater. It had been part of my muggle wardrobe when I would bundle up in the Irish winters. The days where the frost had killed any source of firewood and Mammy refused to let me light a fire with magic.
Six visions solved. Five yet to happen.
It had been a full month since my last new premonition of the future. I felt slightly put out. Often my visions scared me but it made me feel powerful. Like I was special to be chosen to see things others couldn't not , and with my self esteem on the floor I really could do with one soon.
After realising my last name was completely made up I had decided to try and do some research into changing it back. Back to what it had once been. It was tricky, a lot of legal jargon I couldn't really make sense of. And with Mammy dead it would make it ten times harder. I decided it wasn't urgent and was something I could leave until all of this was over. It was important to me. I wanted to be true to who I was , I wanted to be Kitty O'Hara."Incendio!"
"Fuck, Onai that's sore!"
"Engorgio"
"That's not working, Poppy."
"Defodio!"
"You nearly took my fucking arm off Kitty!"
We sat in the study of the Room of Requirement, books spread around us trying to prize Sebastians ring from his finger. So far we had done nothing apart from injure him and marked the marble floor to which Deek had let out a horrified squeal.
Poppy puffed her cheeks out then lay flat on her back , while Natty flicked through another book."Deek can you come here for a moment please?" I called, trying to mend a hole in the sleeve of my old sweater.
The little elf hobbled over curiously while Sebastian downed his fifth Wiggenweld potion, the cut in his arm vanishing.
"Miss Moore, what is you needing?" He bowed deeply."Well, its no news to anyone that elves have different magic to us. Are you able to look at Sebastian's ring please? Just let me know if you think there's anything you can do? Or if you know anything we could try at all ?" I was starting to feel desperate. I didn't relish burning or gashing Sebastian's skin but he had insisted he would allow it if it meant getting the ring off.
Deek looked cautiously at Sebastian who held his long fingers toward the elf. Silver ring still shining, almost mocking our attempts to remove it.Deek touched the ring and after realising it was safe to do so, started inspecting it closely, his long crooked nose almost brushing Sebastian's finger. He huffed and then looked at Sebastian before asking "May Deek try to take it off ?"
Sebastain rose an eyebrow before replying " If you're just going to try and slide it off, it wont work. I physically cannot force my body to do it and all of the girls are burned the second they even think about moving it upward."
"Deek would like to try it sir, if he may." Desk said , somewhat sternly.
Poppy sat upright, suddenly interested by the elf's determination. Sebastian nodded and we watched as Deek slid the ring upward, he hadn't been singed like Poppy, Natty and I had been.
"Fuck off it's working!" Sebastian shouted.
Deek looked as if he was battling an invisible force , using all his might to pull on the ring, it was almost over Sebastian's knuckle when all of a sudden Sebastain was sent flying across the study into a bookshelf , and Deek in the opposite direction, hitting a large painting on the opposite wall.
I sighed deeply, pulling myself from the floor to make sure Deek wasn't hurt, ignoring an angry "What about me?!" From Sallow across the room.
Deek was rubbing the back of his head, and I handed him Wiggenweld from my pocket before kneeling down to inspect any injuries he may have had. His large grey eyes were glassy as he looked into my eyes "Deek is sorry Miss, Deek thought it would work. That is very dark magic." He suddenly burst into tears, pea sized teardrops falling to the floor.
"Deek! Don't be silly you tried your best!" I said grasping the small elf by the shoulders, Sebastian and Poppy approached, Sebastian rolling his shoulders after his flight across the Room of Requirement. Poppy produced a small floral handkerchief to Deek while Sebastian kneeled down beside me and put a strong hand on Deek's forehead. He rubbed it from side to side , ruffling Deeks non existent hair, before saying ;
"Some lad Deek. You tried your best. This thing is just a piece of shit, mate." Sebastian grinned, allowing me the honour of admiring his crisp white teeth.
Deek laughed , his tears drying up as he went to fetch Sebastian a plate of sandwiches.
"Well I've got to go. Mr. Brooke is visiting at last and I know he's been up in arms after not being able to see me until I was discharged from hospital. What're you lot gonna do?" I sighed picking up my book bag from the ground.
"Think Natty and I are gonna grab some lunch and then study for the exams. I've really been slacking and it's only a couple of months away. You want to come Seb?" Poppy said wile she stretched her arms above her head in a yawn. Something about the girls suddenly accepting Sebastian after a year of scepticism made my heart flutter. His determination to break from the ring to protect me from Luka, potentially saving my life, had made them instant fans.
"No thanks Poppy, Deek and I are gonna feed the unicorns and thestrals, Then I'm gonna play with Salazar for a bit. He definitely prefers me to Kitty." He flashed a menacing grin in my direction before biting into one of the sandwiches Deek had reappeared with. Sebastian had been benefiting from animal therapy, the main reason Natty Poppy and I had shown him to the room.
"Not true. See you later." And with that I swept from the room leaving the newly knitted trio with Deek.
"Kitty, Thank Merlin! Oh lord knows I've been sick with worry!"
Bertram Brooke fell to his knees , eyes meeting my own as we stood in Professor Black's office. Black looked incredibly uncomfortable , as he stood from the chair behind his desk, coughing to remind the great ginger man that he was still in the room. Brooke stood upright wiping his large tomato shaped nose on the sleeve on his coat."I will leave you two to catch up, my house elf will be along with tea, if you need anything else just ask him. Excuse me."
Black took a quick look in the mirror who gave him a quick "Looking good." Before he vanished from the room.Brooke pulled out my chair for me , his expression was as if he thought I might shatter on the floor of the office if I moved too quickly.
He sat cautiously beside me , reaching out to hold my hand before quietly asking how I was doing.
I tried so hard to keep the tears in , struggling to speak. Mr.Brooke could see right through me. I needed someone to look after me , someone who I felt protected by. He held his arms open wide accepting my glittery as as my response.
I almost jumped into his embrace, crying into his jacket which smelled of an odd mixture of firewood and gravy.
