"Oh, fuck me."

Austin, Conan, and Gracie turned to see what August had seen.

Standing on her doorstep was Sawyer, her ex-girlfriend, who she hadn't seen or heard from in months.

"Sawyer?" August stammered, momentarily at a loss for words.

A bittersweet smile appeared on Sawyer's face as she looked at August. "Hey, I know this is unexpected, but I had to see you," she said softly.

August's friends exchanged glances, sensing the tension in the air. Gracie, August's girlfriend, squeezed her hand reassuringly.

Taking a deep breath, August invited Sawyer inside, gesturing for her to join the group. As they settled into the living room, the atmosphere shifted, a mix of curiosity and concern filling the room.

Sawyer's eyes wandered over the faces of August's friends, recognizing them from the August's instagram and the news. "I didn't mean to intrude on your celebration," she apologized. "I just couldn't stay away any longer. There's something I need to say."

August nodded, her expression a mixture of apprehension and curiosity. "Alright, Sawyer. What is it?"

Sawyer took a moment to gather her thoughts before speaking. "August, I made a mistake when we broke up. I let my fear and insecurities get the best of me. I realize now how much you meant to me, and I want another chance."

August's heart skipped a beat, caught off guard by Sawyer's unexpected confession. Gracie squeezed her hand tighter, offering silent support.

After a pause, August spoke, her voice filled with a mix of emotions. "Sawyer, I fucking hate you," She started as Austin hid his snort by sipping his drink, "And I'm with Gracie now, and she means the world to me. I love her a hell of a lot more than I loved you."

Sawyer nodded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Okay, that- That hurt, I can't lie," She let out a weak chuckle, "And, uh, my uncle sent me to ask why you sent his nephew to pri-"

August's friends exchanged shocked glances, now realising the complexity of the situation. August leaned closer to Sawyer, confusing the swimmer, as she blatantly checked her out. Now that she was thinking about it, she could see the similarities. The green eyes, dark, curly hair. They had the same nose and eye shapes. Similarities only cousins or siblings would share.

"Jesus Christ on a bike," August hissed out. "Why does that make so much sense? You and Bran. Both psychopaths in your own way. Jesus."

Conan couldn't keep his laughs in any longer as he doubled over in laughter, holding onto Austin, "Wow. You sure know how to pick 'em, August."

The actress flipped him off and bit her lip, "I sent him to prison because he's a prick. You know, I really liked your uncle, he was a great father figure."

Gracie chuckled softly, pulling August back to her before she could throw hands. She was that drunk.

Sawyer left before much more could be said and August grinned in thanks, practically skipping back into the house.

As the clock struck midnight on New Year's Day, August found herself surrounded by her closest friends, Austin, Conan, and her girlfriend, Gracie. Laughter and joy filled the air as they celebrated the start of a new year together.

Gracie was going to be her New Year's kiss this year. Unlike Bran the one prior and Sawyer the one before that. And she was sure that Gracie would be her midnight kiss every year, for the rest of their years.

As the final seconds of the year slipped away, her eyes remained fixed on her, filled with a mixture of hope and longing. Amidst the festive revelry and cascading confetti, her heart whispered a silent plea, echoing through the depths of her being. She yearned for her to be the one she would lean into, the one who would capture her lips in a tender embrace as the clock struck midnight.

In that fleeting moment, she craved the warmth of her affection, the sweet connection that transcended time. For her, it wasn't just about a single New Year's Eve; it was the fervent desire for her to be her eternal partner, her constant source of joy, and the one she would passionately kiss at the dawn of every new year, forever intertwining their souls in a timeless celebration of love.
