My life has never been easy

My life has never been easy. They say when life throws lemons at you, squeeze them and make lemonade with them. But all life had to offer me was a handful of rotten lemons which were, Of course, useless. Life at an orphanage surely isn't a piece of a cake. That was until I moved to New York with my foster parents Robert and Linda. And like a positive person that I was, I hoped for better things to come my way. I thought I finally had a chance to be something and make something out of myself.

After 17 years, I stand today as one of the most successful wedding planners in the city. I have my agency that goes by the name "Your forever". Why that name, you may ask? Well, the idea of being with someone who would love you for eternity and having to spend the rest of your lives with that person has always intrigued me.

Looking at Linda and Robert, who took me in and loved me, who helped me build myself up all these years, did my opinion on ever afters intensify. Watching them grow in love all these years has turned the lamp of hope within me that maybe even I would find somebody who will cherish me the way they do to each other.

Their happy married life has driven me towards the idea of making other couples' wedding day auspicious and euphoric by giving them a day that they'll remember forever.

I completed my college and got out with a degree in MBA in Event Management from NYU. I had always been good at studies because I wanted to be a successful and a better person but also the fact that I didn't want to let Robert and Linda down is what helped me in maintaining consistent high scores.

Most of you might not agree with me when I say that only people who study well and get high scores succeed in life. Even I don't believe in it.

Now.

It's just that when I was a teenager, that was how I always thought, so I put all my energy towards my studies.

Where was I again?

Yeah Robert and Linda.

They were kind enough to include me in their family. I never wanted to let them down. It may sound silly however it was my way to repay them. I want them to always feel a sense of pride in whatever I choose to do, not that they don't, but I still look up to them for their approval on all of my matters. Robert and Linda have been my supporting pillars all these years who encouraged me to choose what I wanted.

At 23, I began my agency by renting out a small duplex apartment three blocks away from our home with the money that I had managed to save from the pocket money that I would get from Robert and what I earned from working at a cafe as a part-time job during my college years.

Now three years later, I can proudly say I am a successful self-made businesswoman with a very content life. Of course, I do face challenges but who doesn't? Challenges make your journey worthwhile and life would become mundane without them. I can say that I'm happy with how my life has turned out. Had it not been for Robert and Linda, I don't think I would be what I am now.

I was sitting at the kitchen island when my bubble of thoughts was burst by Ian, my big brother and the biological son of Robert & Linda a.k.a my mom & my dad. With bluish-grey eyes and sandy blonde hair, he is a spitting image of dad, standing at 6'1 compared to my 5'6 frame. This person standing before me is one of the best people that I have in my life. He has been there for me ever since I became a part of this family, supporting me all along.

"Mornin' Amber"

Clad in his pajamas and a vest with a gold chain adorning his neck and his hair resembling a total bird's nest, I notice Ian making his way toward me, rubbing his eyes.

"Morning Inny". I smile at him.

Siblings do have weird names for each other. The funnier they are, the more the name is gonna irritate them and the happier you'll be at their expense.

He scrunches his nose at the name and settles down beside me. I believe he has come to accept the fact over the years that I wouldn't change his name for anything.

I bet he secretly loves being called inny.

"So what is going on in your brain? Is your brain still sleeping?" He flicks my forehead with his index finger. I gave him an irritated look and slap his hand off my forehead.

"I already called you like 3 times. What are you even thinking about?"

I gave him a mischievous look.

"Well you know just thinking about how you're getting old and are still single but in your case..." I shake my head disappointingly to rile him up, "you're not ready to mingle even when mom's practically bringing her friends' daughters at our house for you to take them out." I tease him.

He looks at me with annoyance and crosses his arm across his chest. I bit my lip suppressing the rising lava of laughter.

"Not you too Amber" He whines groggily.

"Mom is already enough for me and I really don't want another person to bug me about it. I didn't know that you'd be upon me about a girl too." He mutters while pouting.

I laugh at his comment.

"My my, it is so easy to mess with you. You can relax your ass Ian. l am kidding." I say while grinning at him.

Ian shakes his head and stretches his arms above his head moaning in satisfaction.

You see, my brother turned 29 two months back & mom has been bugging him ever since to get himself a girlfriend. But my stubborn bro shrugs it off every time saying he is too busy for romance. He works as the assistant to the CEO of an IT company, "Melington.co" and he is away most of the time, going for business ventures and representing the company overseas for expansion.

But I know the real reason for his avoidance of dating. He is still hung up on that girl he met in college. What was her name again? Yeah, Nadia Chung. She was a med student and they had met at a party. Typical meeting point for freshmen in colleges.

Well, they dated for about a year when she suddenly up and left & moved to Australia. I had met her a few times & she seemed to be a delightful girl, cheerful and friendly, actually quite a match for my brother. I know Inny was quite serious about her & that's why he felt broken when she left. I am not quite sure what happened back then but ever since he never got with any other girl, as far as I know.

"So, I heard mom talking about you having a big client on your hands this time."

He spoke while eyeing my coffee. I swiftly picked up my mug just in case he tries to do something wicked which might make me go harry-potter-casting-deadly-spells -like- crucio- on him. Inny pouts at my gesture causing me to smirk in satisfaction.
