The days that followed the dance were some of the hardest of Emily's life. She felt like she had been set back months like all her progress in getting over Jack had been for nothing. She tried to focus on her studies and on spending time with her friends, but everywhere she went, she felt like Jack's shadow was following her.
It didn't help that Jack seemed to be everywhere she looked. He was in the dining hall, in the library, even walking across the quad. Emily tried her best to avoid him, but it seemed like he was constantly popping up when she least expected it.
One day, as Emily was walking to her next class, she felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around and saw Jack standing behind her.
"Emily, can we talk?" Jack asked, his eyes pleading.
Emily hesitated for a moment before nodding. She knew that they needed to talk about what had happened at the dance, even if she wasn't sure what she wanted to say.
They found an empty bench and sat down, Jack looking at her with an expression of pain on his face.
"I'm so sorry, Emily," Jack said, his voice quiet. "I don't know what came over me at the dance. I was just so... caught up in everything."
Emily felt a flicker of hope in her chest. Maybe Jack was sorry, maybe he had changed.
But then Jack continued speaking, and Emily's hope died.
"I know that I hurt you, Emily," Jack said, his eyes pleading. "But I can't help the way I feel about you. I know that I messed up, but I can't just turn off my feelings like a switch."
Emily felt a surge of anger. Jack was still trying to control her, still trying to make her feel like she owed him something.
"You don't get to just say sorry and expect everything to be okay," Emily said, her voice shaking with emotion. "You hurt me, Jack. You shattered my trust in you. And now you're trying to make me feel guilty for not wanting to be with you? That's not fair."
Jack looked at her, his expression full of hurt and confusion.
"What do you want me to do, Emily?" Jack asked, his voice rising. "How can I make it up to you?"
Emily took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. She knew that she needed to be strong, that she couldn't let Jack's emotions control her own.
"I don't know, Jack," Emily said, her voice softening. "Maybe there's nothing you can do. Maybe we just need to... move on."
Jack looked at her, his eyes full of pain.
"Move on?" Jack repeated, his voice barely above a whisper. "Emily, I love you. I can't just... move on."
Emily felt a pang of sadness. She had loved Jack, too. But that love had been shattered by his actions, by the way, he had treated her.
"I'm sorry, Jack," Emily said, her voice full of sorrow. "I can't be with someone who doesn't respect me. Maybe someday we can be friends, but right now... I need some space."
And with that, Emily stood up and walked away, leaving Jack sitting alone on the bench.
As she walked back to her dorm room, Emily felt like her heart had been shattered all over again. She had wanted to believe that Jack had changed, that they could be together again. But now, she knew that it was impossible. The pain of their past was too much to overcome.
