Run: Verb
Definition: Move at a speed faster than a walk, never having both or all the feet on the ground at the same time
Example: If we don't run we will suffer a fate worse than death.
I had obviously seen pictures of the world outstide these walls, but I've never seen it with my own eyes. Harsh winds blew sand into our eyes, almost causing them to sting. I knew we didn't have long until they started looking for us.
"Down there. I see something,"Thomas shouted over the roar of the winds. I almost breathed a sigh of relief before remembering the tiny particles floating throughout the air. So I simply trudged along as it fought against us, trying to force us backwards. We couldn't go back though, and nothing was going to stop us now.
After what felt like hours we all spotted what Thomas had been pointing out. Buried deep within the sand was an old building, completely ruined and in shambles. However, it seemed like paradise at the moment.
Side by side we all slid down the ground and into a broken window. We arrived at the perfect time because only seconds later the search party has been sent out. Nobody dared to say a word until the bright lights from their vehicles were no longer in sight.
"What are we supposed to do now?"Minho asked. I was well prepared for this question, having been thinking about this for years on end.
"We're going to contact Right Arm. They are rumored to live deep within the mountains, though I've heard of their existence several times. Their biggest goals are to take down WICKED and live a peaceful life which are almost precisely all of ours. They're the perfect option for where to go,"I answered.
"That's a nice speech and all, but how?"Minho questioned."We're going to travel North. It's said that they live approximately 2,000 miles from here. It's risky, but if we keep our wits about us and gather what we can along the way I believe we can arrive at the desired destination safely,"I responded.
After a second I realized I had gone back to speaking in that same robotic and fake tone. I internally told myself off, but I wasn't exactly pressed about that issue. There were much more extreme things to focus on.
"There are two things to know out here. First is to be prepared for anything, and that includes a weather change. The second and most crucial is to watch out for these things called cranks. If you see something out here that resembles a human but is disfigured and blood thirsty get out. Don't let them get near you. Now, we should look for supplies if we're going to go. Make sure to stay with someone,"I instructed.
Thomas stood next to Minho as I directed them to check the back. Teresa stood with Aris, and I sent them to the left wing. Winston took a spot next to Siggy, and I sent them straight ahead. In the end I ended up paired with Newt. I picked up a bag, and we headed to the right of the building.
"So your hair,"He spoke up as I checked what appeared to be a canaster of water.
"Yes. What about it?"I asked nervously. I had a suspicion of what he would say but didn't focus on it."Nothing. I just mean it suits you,"He complimented. That wasn't what I expected, but nevertheless I thanked him as a small grin spread across my face.
"What's it like working there?"He questioned. I couldn't help but freeze at this.
"Why do you want to know?"I asked defensively. The last thing I wanted was some kind of judgement or assumption made, and I certainly didn't want to think about it."I'm just curious. How'd you end up working for them anyway?"
"I didn't have a choice. My parents worked there so I was expected to follow their footsteps,"I explained."Where are they now?"
"I don't know where my mother is, and my father has been dead to me for years,"I stated simply as he handed me a flashlight.
"Since you worked there do you know anything about ours?"He asked quietly. I debated telling him about Lizzie. In the end didn't he deserve to know?
"No. You were all taken. You have someone else though. She's a lot like you."
"Really? What is she? Like a sister or-""Run!"We heard Thomas shout. Instantly, I had an idea of just what we were supposed to be running from.
"Cranks. We have to go. Don't stop running, and don't look back as you do,"I instructed. Before he could react I grabbed his hand and started pulling him alongside me. We raced past Aris and Teresa who stood there confused.
"Don't just stand there. Get moving,"I yelled. They didn't see exactly what it was, but they understand the gravity of the situation as they sprinted next to us.
"Get up the stairs! Some of them are probably blind,"I directed, already storming up the broken esculater. I heard them behind us but didn't stop to look. I couldn't if I wanted to keep living.
As we got to the top we heard Teresa scream. In one swift motion Thomas had beaten the thing down. I didn't stick around for the rest as I stuck with the rest of the group.
"Where are we supposed to go?"Winston asked.
"How the hell are we supposed to know?"I pointed out as we ran straight forward."You know the world."
"No. I really don't. Now shut up, and focus. You and Newt need to avoid the cranks."From behind us we heard that the others had caught up. I continued to pay it no mind as I bolted forward, my footsteps making long strides as I did.
Quickly rounding a corner we were face to face with one of those things. Before any of us were able to react Aris ran forward with a bat. At the last second he held it down causing the crank to fall face first. While it was distracted we ran around it. There was no time to think about that success. We still weren't safe. Where there's one there's at least ten more.
I didn't think to check beside me as I forced myself to keep going, at some point ending up behind the others.
In a twist a crank crashed through the window and landed on top of me. Before it had time to react I hit it in the face with the butt of my gun. Then, I caught it by surprise as I tossed it off me with ease. In an insant Newt kicked the thing through the glass.
"Not you Newt. You're supposed to just run. I'm immune. Worry about yourself. You're not going to die saving me. Do you understand?"I yelled, as we kept chasing after the others.
"Yeah, but-"
"Do not save me around those things. Do you understand me Newt?"I repeated louder.
"Yes, but-"
"Good. Come on. They went this way,"I directed, turning into a narrow hallway. We sprinted towards the end where half the group was trying to bust through metal chains. From behind us were more cranks.
"Newt. Get ready for even more chaos."
Before he could say anything else I shot the gun into the metal roof above us. As I expected the electricity almost melted it as it dripped down onto the ground. Finally, I got the desired result as the roof behind us collapsed. Still, I knew it could spread.
"Come on! You two got this!"Minho urged, keeping the door open. Putting all I had into it I forced myself to keep up as we kept going. From behind me I heard another piece of the roof clank to the floor. Breaking my own rule, I looked back to make sure Newt wasn't hit. He was right there. Relief flooded through my veins knowing that he was still alive.
With one last stride we both ran out the doors, with me almost tripping over my laces on the way out. Minho followed us out as he slammed the heavy door shut.
"Hide until daylight. Cranks thrive in darkness,"I explained.
So we did. Finding a concrete slab we hid there. At some point everyone had drifted off.
Me though? I stayed up with my weapon ready just in case the worst happens, and I'm not just talking about cranks. No, we also had a different type of evil to look out, and this one was smart. If we weren't careful we'd end up right back in WICKED's grasp.
