Payton’s POV* later that nightFuck! He was here already! It’s cool, just act normal I told myself.
"Hey Dean, Dinner is on the table. Come on in and join me." I called to him, trying to stay calm.
He did as I asked him to, and walked over to me at the table. "Okay." Was his response, and he seemed happy to see me. I caught a glimpse of him smiling, but he immediately hid it when he noticed I was looking.
"Dig in, I worked hard on dinner." I said trying to act proud of myself. "And no, it isn’t spicy, I know how bad your spice tolerance is."He laughed. "Oh thanks." He said sarcastically. "You’re basically calling me a weakling."
Okay maybe this wasn't going to be as hard as I expected... Things were going good so far... he didn't seem to notice how worried I was."Not basically, I am calling you a weakling." I said and laughed as well. good, I was acting like nothing was wrong.
"Gee thanks." He laughed. "You are such a good friend.""The greatest." I beamed proudly, starting to calm down. "Now shut up and eat! It’s going to get cold!" I demanded, and shoved a taco into his mouth.
He grabbed it startled, and started chewing.
"There we go." I said happily, and started eating as well.
We ate our food for a bit, not saying anything but small talk. I think we both knew a heavy conversation was on it’s way, so we just let it be until we finished eating. I wanted to spare us the awkwardness right now, and I think he was in silent agreeance.
When we finished up our food, we put the dishes in the dishwasher, and cleaned up what mess we had made.
“Do you want to talk in my room?" I asked, as I put the last of the food away in the fridge.
"Yeah that works for me." He told me.
"Okay cool." I replied. "Lets go." I left the kitchen and walked through the apartment to my bedroom.
He followed after me.
I opened my door, and entered my room. I then climbed into my bed sitting up against the wall. I patted the spot beside me. "Come sit." I told him.
He did as I asked. He came in the room and climbed into my bed sitting next to me.
"Hi." I said pretty awkwardly.
"Hey." He said back. "I know that everything has been a lot lately, so I want to start off with apologizing. Payton, I’m sorry." He said. His voice was honest, and I knew he truly meant the words he spoke.
"Dean you don’t need to apologize." I said softly. "Nothing that has happened has remotely been your fault. We both made decisions, and that’s what happens when you make decisions, they have consequences."
He smiled thinly. "You’re right about that part, but that’s not what I’m apologizing for. I’m apologizing for giving you so many mixed messages. I want to clear the air and tell you exactly how I feel right here and now." He said looking at me with soft and honest eyes.
I tensed up immediately. I’m positive Dean noticed, he also probably saw the fear rise into my eyes. "Okay…" Was all I could muster as a response.
He took hold of my hands. "Payton, we have been friends for so, so long. We’ve seen each other at our worse, and even at our best. I know things as of late have been rocky, and a bit unexpected, but I’ve been so happy that these moments have been spent with you."
