- THREE DAYS BEFORE THE PARTY -

"Y/N?" called a very stern sounding Marius from his desk. He looked up to see you standing there in an instant by his side.

"Yes, sir?" you cooed playfully. On his desk was a coffee gone cold. You had made that for him this morning... you thought and you sighed.

"Have you not even enough time to drink a coffee, baby?" you ask quietly, eyes saddening. He fixed his silver tie and leaned back, puffing out his chest.

"Well, I've been busy sorting out the details for your birthday party, and-"

"I already told you that I was fine just with a small cake from the local bakery and just us two, like every year..."

Marius looked out the window.

"Well, you know, my father says that I can't really keep you a secret anymore... the media thinks I'm having a short fling with you, or that I'm just keeping you as a little toy at home."

He smirks, taking your hand, that had a small ring placed on it, marking you as his fianceé. The ring had a lovely little purple amethyst studded in it.

"That's not the case at all and we just can't keep them circulating rumours like that about us... you understand, right? I figured this was a good way to finally announce that I'm engaged. Celebrating your birthday with everyone else... although..."

Marius looked you back in the eyes.

"You know I'd give anything for it to be just us two. But I promise to make it worth your while, okay? You know the parties Pax throws are top-tier."

"I know. Thank you, Mari."

"So! I called you here to ask you a very important question."

He rubbed his hands and prepared to question you. He cracked open one eye to spy you standing by his side.

"Purple balloons?"

"Blue!" you countered.

"How about purple and blue?"

"Done!"

You laughed as he pulled you onto his lap.

"That's my love. Happy early birthday, sweetheart."

He produced a gift-bag from under the desk and handed it to you.

"This is just a small thing before the big present in a few days."

You smiled and rolled your eyes before opening it eagerly. You squealed once you recognised it as the beautiful, expensive silk dress you spotted while window-shopping last year. When you had gone in to the store to look for it, and asked an assistant, they had told you the last one was just sold out, and that the line was discontinued.

"Oh, Marius! It's... even prettier than I last saw it..."

He had gotten it on a special order from the store's online website, and requested it to be re-tailored to a purplish pink, from the aqua blue that it previously was.

"There's only one of this dress in the world." he told you. "Take good care of it."

A thought popped into your head.

"Could I wear it to the party?"

"That's why I got it for you."

Your heart filled with excitement and love for Marius, as you squirmed in happiness. He grinned at seeing your joy. He'd do anything to see you on cloud nine, cloud ten if possible.

Later that evening, you slept in Marius' room soundly beside him, wearing matching pajamas. He rolled onto his side, stirring awake as his phone rang loudly. He had to keep it on the loudest setting because his work was quite dire. He grabbed it off the bedside table, frowning at the number.

"Mm..." you mumbled sleepily, annoyed that you had to be awakened too.

"Shh, it's okay, honey. Go back to sleep." he whispered to you in a low voice, before dragging himself to his feet and answering the call.

"Yes, von Hagen here." he said, trying to keep sleep out of his tone.

"Hello, Marius." came his father's voice, chuckling. "Sorry to interrupt your beauty sleep."

"Hello, father." Marius spoke, relaxing his voice and taking the leisure of yawning widely. "It's not a problem. Anything you needed?"

"No, I just wanted to tell you that I'm proud of you for taking the initiative of organising a party for little miss Y/N. This is more of an indication to me that you're competent of your position of CEO. You're putting Pax first. You know how the media and the journalists are. It'd be so easy to cause a scandal if you're seen with a woman without a ring on her."

"... Thanks I guess."

"Alright, son. This is your first party you've organised by yourself, isn't it? I'm incredibly impressed by the current arrangements. Vincent is keeping me up to date. I am looking forward to attending. Also, just as a little note... don't don anything too flashy. Just a regular business suit would do. You don't want people thinking you have suits to spare. Modesty is the best policy."

"Alright, father... goodnight." Marius sighed.

"Goodnight."

When the call closed at last. Marius heaved a sigh, and smacked his forehead against the doorframe of his bedroom. His messy hair fell over his eyes. You were right... just a small cake and the two of you would do... that's what you've been doing every year every since you met. Yes, you were his personal work assistant before, and just recently became his fianceé.

But he let his mind wander. What if he wasn't pressured to get engaged? What if he wanted to take things at his own pace with you? What if the weight of his position wasn't there? If he was just a regular person able to have a regular relationship, free to go on dates without having to hide from the media, don disguises?

Did you feel all this too? He suddenly thought with a pang.

Maybe you too were tired of all the picky, nitty-gritty details you'd have to be careful of.

It's your birthday, and as far as Marius was concerned, it's your day, not Pax's. He could always just make a PSA about your engagement, but no. It was always his father doing over-the-top things. Marius hasn't even kissed you outside of either his office or his house. He wasn't allowed to less it cause a scandal.

The cold stung his bare shoulders as he moved towards his bed again, settling in and wanting nothing more than to hold you close like a teddy bear.

"M- Mari...?" you whispered groggily.

"Shh... just stay here, with me."

- ONE HOUR BEFORE THE PARTY -

"I want to wear my best suit though..." Marius whined, frowning. "It's Y/N's day and I need to look my absolute handsomest."

"No." Vincent replied, laying out a regular business suit for Marius, the one he wears to work every day.

"I'm not wearing that. Where's my traditional Chinese suit? The bright purple one?"
