Months later, school begins.

"Bye!" I tell my mom as I close the car door and walk into the school building. She wishes me a good first day and drives off. I step through the doors and quickly power-walk my way down the main hall and find my friends grouped together upstairs outside our first period classroom. My group chat friends, Talia, Jasmin, and Jana are all there along with Alan, Jasper, Kaleb, and Penelope.

"Hi Kalia," Alan calls out. I wave back as I walk towards them. I pull Penelope away from the group, kidnapping her to come to my locker with me so I can put away my stuff. On the way to my locker, she chats about everything, from the latest Netflix TV Shows to the latest books she's read.

"Oh my god, it's been so long since I've seen you! How've you been, ugh, wait I've got so much to tell you about all the shit that went down in the summer! Oh, but first, what's your timetable. If we aren't in the same classes, I'm going to shoot myself," Penelope gushes.

"Hold on, let me get my timetable out," I replied, pulling out my phone to sign into our school platform, "in the meantime, tell me everything about your summer."

"Ok, so like you know how I got a job near the theatre? This one day, this really cute guy walked in and..."

Penelope trails off, recounting her multiple incidences with said cute guy over the summer while I continue to navigate the school portal and nod "Uh-huh," "OMG??" to punctuate her retellings. Finally, I retrieve my schedule. We hold our phones side by side, comparing.

"Aww, you got math first period? You're so lucky!" I exclaimed, bumping her in the arm.

"Shut the hell up," she grumbled back, "you know I despise math. And why is that our tables got like swapped? You got history  for your first period. That's my favorite class! Why do you get it first?!"

We scan quickly, "hey we have Spanish together!" I exclaim.

"Ew, I wouldn't have taken Spanish if the stupid counsellor just let me take geography. Ugh, at least I have you. Please carry me Kalia, I'm praying" Penelope pantomimed as she jokingly clung to arm and pretended to slump down and pray.

I retract my arm playfully, "what are you saying? You literally did better than me in Spanish last year. You'll be fine. Plus at least we're in the same class for once, which I did not expect since we practically chose opposite courses."

"Ugh whatever."

The bell rings, the chimes ringing out to signify the beginning of our first day of sophomore year.

"See you later loser!" Penelope calls, as she stalks off to her first class.

I smile back and exhale silently, walking quickly to my first class of the year. This year, I'm determined to do even better than freshman. With multiple crucial math contests lined up, new club positions to direct and apply for, and grades to get, I can't afford any distractions. At least, that's what I thought. I never expected things to blow so epically out of proportion. And most of all, I never expected him to come into my life like this.
