Flashback
It's Kamal sir's funeral today. My mentor, my guide and at last my savior. He saved my life. He didn't think twice before coming between me and the bullet meant to pierce through my heart. As I close my eyes, I feel my throat constrict and tears roll down my cheeks. I see flashes of Kamal sir breathing his last in my arms. His last whisper was "Sai". Sai, Kamal sir's daughter. A fresh set of tears leave my eyes. Although, I never met Sai, I knew her through Kamal sir's countless memories and stories. I knew I had to give her closure. I needed to see her.
I slowly opened my eyes and there she stood. Her back facing me as she cremated her father's body. I approach her and stood by her. I finally muster the courage to look up, the guilt still eating at me inside. As my eyes laid on her face, I'm left awestruck. I can't look away. I can see the pain shining through her eyes, yet I'm stuck on her beautiful tear-streaked cheeks. I realize in that moment that I haven't seen anyone more mesmerizing than Sai and feel my heart tighten. I am so lost in her that I don't notice when she acknowledges my presence. As her eyes meet mine for the first time, she sears my soul with her piercing gaze and the next moment she faints, as I cradle her head in my arms.

I rush her to the hospital. I watch her lying on the hospital bed and shed more tears as I feel the burden of my guilt.
"I'm sorry Sai".
A few days pass. I stay informed on Sai's health. She was discharged and is now home. I knew I had to meet her again and tell her the truth.
I was let into Kamal sir's house and walked to her room. I stopped at the door as I see her sitting in silence. Staring into nothingness. Her eyes moist, telling a story of their own. I feel my heart squeeze thinking about the unfortunate incident I need to share with her. I was about to step in when I hear a silent cry leave her lips. I stood still. I can't do this. I was about to step out, but it was too late.
I hear her soft voice for the first time.
Kaun hain aap ? ...
My heart flutters.

The words get stuck in my throat as she looks me in the eyes inquisitively, awaiting an answer.
I was about to say something when fellow officers walk in and inform Sai about my identity. They tell her how fond Kamal sir was of me and how he was my mentor. Her eyes soften has she hears stories of her father.
The officers leave and we are left alone.
"I'm sorry. Aap yahan kab se honge aur maine aapko sahi se andar bulaya bhi nahin Virat sir." As she utters my name for the first time, I'm left speechless. "Virat sir" I whisper to myself as a faint smile graces my lips.
"Aap jaake bethiye, main aapke liye kuch lati hun."
"Nahin Sai, tumhe takleef uthane ki koi zaroorat nahin hai, main thik hoon."
She looks at me a bit dazed "aapko mere naam ... ?"
"Kamal sir humesha tumhare baare mein baatein karte rehte te".
"Tum mujhe nahin jaanti ho Sai, par main tumhe janta hun".
I hold her gaze as I convey this to her.
She finally looks away and is about to walk out when she stops and says "aap please ayiye aur thoda bethiye. Main aapko aise nahin jaane de sakti".
She walks away and I follow behind her.
As we sat and chat over a cup of tea, my eyes follow her every movement. Even if I wanted to, I couldn't take my eyes off her. I share some memories built over the years of Kamal sir with her as she in turn tells me about her abba. The tiny smile that touches her lips every time she recites a new story about her abba warms my heart. I realize in that moment that that's how I want her to be forever, happy. I want to see her happy.
It suddenly struck me. I can't leave her alone. I am the reason she is on her own today. I have to take care of her. I convince her to come with me to the city and pursue her studies there. She is hesitant and rightfully so. I am still a stranger to her. I am about to drop the idea when she surprises me with her answer. She slowly lifts her eyes towards me and agrees. I am left speechless. I feel a warmth deep in my heart. Her trust means the world to me. She pours her heart out to me.
"I don't know why I feel like trusting you Virat sir, but I do."
The next morning we packed and left for my house in the city. I don't know where our destiny will take us, but I know one thing.
I'll never let go of Sai ...
