After I'm done speaking I look towards Mathew to see his reaction.
"So?" I ask disappointed by the silence. He turns towards me and shrugs.
"Okay..well I'm rich and my dad cut me off except for college tuition. So I have to have a job..as your mailman in order to pay the bills of course", he replies."Oh poor you" I say confused as to how calm his reaction to my story was. He chuckles and stands up grabbing his jacket.
"Your leaving already?" I ask he turns back to me and nods.
"I have work tomorrow" he says. I than realize tomorrow is Saturday and I nod. I show him to the door."Bye Mathew" I say he nods turning around. I'm about to close the door when he looks back and says.
"Oh and Riley you never said details about what you went through just that your dad was a murderer..maybe you should tell someone about what really happened...don't keep it bundled up...it doesn't take a genus to figure out that it's ruining you inside."I stand there shocked as he walks away. He was right in a way. Maybe a lot of ways. I shook it off and went back inside.
But somehow I knew he was right. I kept a lot to myself that I hadn't told the police and even Callie doesn't know. I look at myself in the mirror and I can't help but be disgusted. I see a tired girl whose smile is fake. I see nothing left. I leave the mirror with that image stuck in my mind.
***************************************************************I spent the whole night replaying his words in my head. They were stuck and they wouldn't leave.
What did he know about loss, about hurt and about painful memories? Huh? He's just a rich kid who got cut off. Poor him he didn't watch his father abuse woman, take away their dignities and kill mothers.
I realized it was already morning so I got up and took a long shower to try and clear my head. It didn't help.I walked into the kitchen to make toast when Callie came in full on dressed.
"It's Saturday why aren't you still in pajamas?" I ask eyeing her critically. She had even put a decent amount of make up on.
"A date" she states shrugging. A what now?!."Oh have fun" I shrug it off. If she is going out with Easton she won't hear the last of my rant. Which reminded me, I haven't heard anything about the graffiti.
"Callie did you hear about the graffiti that Easton did?" I asked nonchalantly. She nods.
"Yeah It's all over the news apparently he got beat up pretty bad" she replies before saying her goodbyes and heading out. I smile to myself.
What?
He deserved it.
**********************************************************************************************
The morning went by rather slowly since I sat on my couch doing absolutely nothing. But by noon I prayed for something interesting to happen. And it seemed as though my prayers had been answered when a banging sound came from my door.I opened it to find Mathew. I wondered why he was here if he had rounds to do. But before I could ask he came in and shut the door behind him.
"What the hell?" He turns to me and smirks. He takes off his bag full of mail and puts it down on the couch.
"Well apparently your neighbors are angry with how I've been delivering the mail. Which there is nothing wrong with it!" He says. I couldn't control it I was laughing so hard my ribs hurt. He scowled at me unamused." and what am I supposed to do?" I question as I try not to keep laughing. He frowns while looking at me failing to stifle my laughter.
"Well the old lady was throwing stones and your other neighbor had a hose-"
"With water! Ohh no" I say sarcastically laughing. He stands up and comes closer to me. I stop laughing as he overpowers me with his height."Fine you do my job then" he says I gulp and shrug.
"Fine easy...I'll show you how it's done..now just give me a few minutes to get dress", I say he nods and seats himself on the couch as I go to change.I quickly put on black skinny jeans, gray converse, a black tank top and a thin long grey cardigan. I out my hair in a side braid and come out ready to go.
"Finally ugh you took forever" I rolled my eyes at his impatience. He grabbed his mail bag and threw it over his shoulder. I followed him out and closed the door behind me."Okay look show me your first route" I say he does and we walk towards that street.
"Okay you give me this side and you get that side now you have to put it in the mail boxes and in the right ones" I instruct as he nods we start after a few minutes I finish and so does he. I still finished first though."Okay now same thing for every street" I say he takes one side I take the other.
At one point it turned into a competition and I was running to finish first.
At the last street Mathew and I screamed discouraging words from across the street."You deliver mail like my grandmother!" I scream
"Only cause I knew your grandmother so well I learned from her wise skills!" He retorts.
"You need to find a better career!"
"Haha that's why I'm gonna finish first!" He says before getting ahead of me I laugh and try to hurry up. At the very end of the street we race to beat each other.
"Aha I win!" He says when we meet in the middle."I let you out of the respect for my dear grandmother" I say laughing along with him.
We both walked back In silence."Thank you" he says when we reach my door.
"Nah no problem. My grandmother would have wanted me too" I say wiping away a fake tear. He chuckles.
"Yeah maybe you can help me tomorrow ?" He says I laugh and say sure but before I shut the door I scream back.
"Nice try! Tomorrows Sunday!"
"Took you long enough" I stand there till his figure isn't visible.
