Chapter 1
Make me
"Yallah! Just wait a second, it won't hurt"
I rolled my eyes at the woman standing in front of me on a 5m tall tree branch.
"I told you, this isn't a great idea at all", Aneesa murmured at me, as I wielded my puny little backpack behind my back, excitedly. I rolled my eyes once again.
"What are you talking about? This is gonna be the best", and with that, I swung myself under the window, to the branch. I clung my nails into the rough tree bark, as I carefully fetched a torch from my pocket.
"If my parents find out about this, Wallahi. It won't end up pretty", Ani muttered, as she climbed down with me.
"As if I'm gonna be honoured, right", I whispered, sarcastically.
"Remind me why we even signed up for this?". I kept quiet.
It was past midnight, and me and my best friend decided to do our first bunkout, cuz why not. It's been 19 years, and I've still never ever bunked out. Like, c'mon. I bet the girls ( and boys of course ) in our class bunk every night.
My name is Fatima Ahmadi, and I'm a 19-year-old, in her last year of high school. I have two best friends; Aneesa and Grace. My hobbies are...Well, sketching and football. Anyways, enough about me; I need to be somewhere else.
"And you, know I'm just wearing a niqab, and a tunic, cuz we're in the dark? If we get seen, you're screwed", said Ani, who fixed her niqab the moment we jumped down.
"Oh please, stop being such a coward", I hissed at her, as I leaped at the soft grass. Now's our time to shine.
"So. First, where?"Ani asked.
"You know the fountain park, it's like only a kilometre away. Let's go there. At night, the lights turn on and it's really cool! Plus, if we're lucky, we might as well find a bench to sit on", I said, as I beckoned her to follow me. I tucked my phone in my back pocket, and scampered on to the empty road. It wasn't cold, but a slight cold breeze hit my nostrils. Light goosebumps crippled on my skin, as I shivered. Stupid of me to not even bring a jacket. Its freaking September.
"Ima! I really don't think this is a great idea", Ani whimpered, as she crept up behind me, lightly padding on the grass. We sneaked down the bare streets, surrounded by small houses and street lights. It almost felt like a horror story, and that was the best bit. I turned my head right and then left, held on to Ani's hand, and scurried across the zebra-crossing. We didn't wanna encounter any guys now. We walked in silence for some minutes, as the sound of our faint footsteps echoed through the avenues. Ani inched closer, while I started to walk faster. Are you scared? Oh no, not at all.
Finally, after what seemed like an hour, we could see a golden light far away...Which seemed like a fountain light?
"C'mon, let's run!", I whispered. Ani obeyed, and we sprinted to the waterfall. We were panting by the time we reached. I looked up. Golden, dashing, lights danced in front of me. The water flew out of its hose, as if it was crystal. Then, it was as if it went back in. Then, it started again. In the day, it's just an ordinary fountain. But, this is my first time seeing this fountain at night after 19 years of living in this neighbourhood. Yes. When I say 19 years, I mean 19 years.
"It's even prettier at night", Ani whispered. I nodded, still eyes glued to the beauty. "There's a bench, right there", Ani pointed across my direction. I turned my head and saw a clean, recently brown-painted bench, with a small table in front of it. I glanced at Ani.
"Look at our luck", Ani grinned, and we sprinted to the bench. Falling, it felt as if we hadn't sat for years or something. I patted my stomach, "I need food" and reached for my bag. As Ani watched, I pulled out two chocolate bars and two smoothies. Ani licked her lips, "Mmm. Looks delicious", she said, as she took her chocolate bar. There wasn't a soul to be seen, the whole town asleep, except us here; Eating chocolate bars.
I gasped. Ani looked at me, worriedly, "We completely forgot about taking a snap!". Ani rolled her eyes, "Sure". I flicked out my phone from my jeans pocket. 2:02 AM. I showed the screen to Ani, "Why does that almost seem scary?"I laughed loudly, as it echoed down the narrow valleys down the square.
"Maybe cuz we've never been out this late?"Ani shrugged, as she took a bite of her bar. I opened Snapchat and brought the phone away from our faces. Ani smiled, while I stuck out my tongue. "This is the best", I laughed, as I added a time sticker. Ani smiled, "Oh, I suppose". I pressed on everyone's contact ( other than my cousins, who would immediately report to Mama or Papa ), just before adding it to my story. As soon as I was about to slide my phone in my pocket, a text message popped up. My eyes slowly, unwillingly went up.
Papa.
