I looked at the familiar figures in front of me
My parents
What are they doing here?
It speaks trouble
Just like the last time I was here
Did they find out?
No no no they can't
They can't
They won't
I chanted it in my head to make myself feel better
As if it would actually work
I wish it did
We stood up & wai'd as they made their way towards us & took a seat.
"You're all grown up now, Nunew. You look so much like your dad when he was at your age" said Hia's mom while smiling as I took a seat
I smiled back awkwardly, not knowing what to say
"Zee is becoming more handsomer day by day"
Said my mom as hia also smiled awkwardly
"Why don't you eat something?" hia's mom said, sensing the awkwardness
"I'm good, maa" I said smiling
"Me too" hia replied
She sighed & looked at hia's dad expecting him to say something.
He cleared his throat
"We have something we would like you to do"
He said with his businesses voice
The one that doesn't accept refusal
I wonder what he is going to talk about
Is it about work?
I hope it is
"We want you both to get married"
"What?!" Me & hia said in unison
"Look you guys have known each other since you were a child. You are also close & work together. We think it would be great if-"
"You're no one to think who is right for us"
Said Hia before his mom could continue
"We should be the one choosing who we want to get married with"
I said
"That's what your grandpa wanted before he passed away, Nunew"
Said my dad
I paused at the mention of the familiar figure.
Grey hair, brown eyes, pointed nose, a soft smile on thin lips flashed before my eyes.
He wanted it....?
"It was his last wish" Said my mom
Last wish...?
"He wanted you both to get married since you were a child"
Said Hia's mom as I tried to process everything
Why are we being told about it now?
Is this some kind of trap?
I can't let things get the best of me
"Why didn't you tell us sooner?"
Hia voiced out my thoughts
"We wanted to tell you at the right time"
Said my mom
"What right time? You think telling us at the last moment is the right time!?"
I asked
"You just graduated some days ago Nunew"
Said my mom
"So what? I was still an adult"
"Is Grandpa really the only reason behind it?"
Said hia while looking at his parents
His eyes held no emotion
He was hinting something
Something I also think
"Stop talking back Zee! You both are being disrespectful here"
Said my dad
Anger was lacing his undertones
"Standing up for ourselves isn't talking back"
I shot back
"Enough! We are telling you to try it, not forcing you. And you're going to get engaged next month whether you like it or not"
Said hia's dad sternly with a tone that accepts no arguments & walked away followed by my parents & hia' mom
He is saying they aren't forcing us while exactly doing that
How ironic
"Stay for lunch" said hia's mom before she followed them
We both stayed there trying to process everything
______
The lunch was awkward
No one spoke a word
Hia' dad looked angry. As if he would yell if anyone says a thing
But I have known him for years
I know that he has this face on purpose so that we won't talk more about the matter
It's not like we actually can even though we want to
I looked at hia
He was eating silently
His eyes were distant & cold yet his face was neutral
I need to talk to him
After finishing lunch we wai'd at everyone as a goodbye
Hia's dad barely spared a glance at us as we left
---
As the car came to a stop in front of my house I looked at hia
He was silent throughout the whole ride
And it's scaring me
I want to talk with him but I don't know how
Sensing my gaze at him he looked back & sighed
His eyes became soft as he spoke
"Nunew, I don't want you to marry me because of this stupid engagement our parents are making us do"
He looked frustrated at the mention of the engagement
"You're still young Nunew. You are a rising star & you will become more successful as time passes. I don't want our marriage to be an obstacle"
I opened my mouth to speak but decided to let him continue first
"And most importantly I don't want you to marry me because you were forced "
He said
As always he was putting my career first
Putting me first before himself.
I wished he would care about himself as much as he cares about others
"I'm not the only successful one here, hia. I don't think our marriage will be an obstacle in my career. And even if it does I don't care."
I entwined my hands with his & looked at him determinedly
"Because I want to marry you"
