The next day, Onyx waited for Gildarts outside the guild, like he had the night before. He shifted from side to side as he waited.
He didn't see the other mage until around noon, with a woman on his arm. Onyx was rightfully furious but also crushed to bits. He disappeared inside the guild and sat at the bar. Mira watched as he lit a cigarette with shaking hands. Immediately, she knew what had happened.
Mira frowned and gently ruffled his hair, causing him to flinch back. He drew in a shaky breath before looking at Mira.
"I thought this would work..I thought he would be different..Mira, I miss Lisanna.." He had tears in his eyes as he spoke.
Mira's frown softened as she gently held his hand that didn't have the cigarette, "I know you do, kiddo..I miss her too."
Onyx sighed and gently pushed her hand away. He took a long drag from his cigarette before putting it out and standing. "I'm going on a solo mission...clear my head maybe.." He proceeded up to the S-Class floor and chose a random mission before showing Mira and leaving.
Mira sighed as Lucy plopped down at the bar. "Why so down, Mira?"
"It's coming up on Lisanna's death date and we, meaning me, Elfman, and Onyx are all just...down and depressed." Mira explained with a shrug.
"Its not that surprising"
Mira glared at her. "What's that supposed to mean."
Lucy held her hands up. "I'm just saying Onyx is always down and depressed."
Mira sighed once again and leaned against the bar. "He hasn't always been like that though. He was here when me, Elfman, and Lisanna joined. I tormented him like I did everyone else...until that one night.."
"What happened?"
"Me, Lisanna, and Elfman went on a mission and some complications happened and Elfman's takeover magic went on the fritz and he...he hurt Lisanna pretty bad. He didn't mean to, but she didn't make it through...and when Onyx heard the news, he went wild. Makarov couldn't control him, Gildarts couldn't control him, nobody could...except Lisanna. She was the key for him."
Lucy smiled softly. Of course, she didn't know the extensive history of everyone in the guild, but this little insight was welcome.
"She was his world. They were inseparable to the point Lisanna would sneak downstairs when Onyx was put in timeout as kids." Mira choked back tears, "we all miss her, but he loved her more than anyone could ever know. They were perfect for each other."
Lucy listened as she also held back tears. She didn't know a demon who had turned against the whole guild just days prior would be capable of loving a human being.
"Everyone hoped he would find another, but it has yet to work out...Lisanna is still his one and only, no matter what. I'm beginning to think they did something similar to a mating ritual for dragon slayers, where they find their life-long mate." Mira thought out loud "but maybe they didn't and he just genuinely doesn't want anyone else.."
Lucy didn't know what to say or do. She sat there and let Mira tell her all kinds of stories about the four of them as kids.
A few days passed and it was the day everyone dreaded. Elfman and Mira did their best to be cheery and positive, but it was hard. Onyx had returned from his mission just the day prior and you could see from his face and the shakiness of his body that he didn't want to be messed with. At all.
However, Natsu, of course, didn't stop long enough to pay attention to the atmosphere around the demon and ran over to him. "Hey, wanna go on a mission?" He asked in his normal loud tone.
Onyx flinched hard and shook his head. Natsu pouted and began tugging his arm while whining that he never does anything with anyone anymore.
Onyx growled and shoved him off the stool and to the floor. He looked at him with a death glare through his grown out hair.
"I told you no." He said in a deep tone "and when I say no, I mean. No. Today is not the day you want me to be pissed off."
Natsu looked at him fearfully and nodded before scampering away. Onyx sat back down when Elfman walked over. Onyx groaned as he knew what was coming.
"That wasn't very MANly of you!" Elfman shouted as he flexed his arms.
Onyx's head shot up and his pupils dilated. He immediately stood up and began throwing punches and kicks at the bigger man. Elfman, shocked from the reaction, was pummeled to the floor.
Mira gasped and tried to get Onyx off her brother but he spun around and shoved her back, causing her to stumble into the barstools behind her. This caused Laxus to jump up and help his woman before attacking the demon.
Onyx growled and redirected his lightning attacks, which Laxus mostly dodged. However, one hit him in the stomach and he doubled over. Onyx took the opportunity and began throwing an array of daggers at the mage, most hitting Laxus and causing him to fall to the ground.
Onyx walked over to him and sneered at him. "I think the Strauss' can handle their own battles." He kicked Laxus before pulling him by the hair to look at him.
Laxus was terrified at this point, and that's saying something. Onyx's eyes were pure black, his veins black as well, his messy appearance made him scarier than Laxus could ever imagine. His hair all tousled, his baggy clothes, his dead eyes, the intense shaking, everything in this moment made Laxus genuinely fear for his life.
The whole guild was silent as they watched the scene unfold. Onyx growled and threw Laxus' head onto the floor without hesitation. He then turned to Elfman, who stared back in shock and fear.
"It's all your fault." Onyx said in an echoey voice "you killed her. You took the one person I actually cared about. Took her away in an instant. I will never forgive you. I will always hate you and your speeches about 'being a man'. It's pathetic."
He turned to Mira, "and you are no better. You let him do it. You let him get out of control, knowing he was never that good of a takeover mage in the first place." His face softened a little and his voice shook slightly "you let him take her...the one person who didn't abandon me, who didn't judge me...the one person who actually loved me.."
Mira held back her tears. He was right. Elfman didn't know what he was doing back then. He had just found out what his magic was, let alone get enough practice in before that mission. She knew Lisanna was the only one who never seemed afraid of him, never seemed disgusted with him.
Makarov popped up on the bar. He stared at Onyx, who stared back. Onyx sneered and growled. "And you let them go." He stated and he walked towards the guildmaster. But, just before he could do anything, the doors opened.
(Hah, cliffhanger peeps. Ch. 20 is gonna be f u n)
