''What happened to your grades, Shari?!'' Jean inquired angrily of her daughter.
Shirley explained without glancing at her mother, "I just had some difficulties with some of the subjects, mom..."
''This has never occurred before!'' Jean yelled.
''I'm not perfect, mom,'' Shirley reacted.
''I don't like your tone of speaking! And this is because you are constantly out with your buddies!''Jean erupted.
''It implies I'm a regular person, mom,'' Shirley answered.
''How dare you answer me like that, as if you know everything about life!''
Shirley chose to remain silent since, knowing her mother's mouth, she knew this might go on indefinitely.
''Do you have a boyfriend?''Jean inquired flatly.
Shirley lied: "I don't have, mom."
''Don't you attempt to deceive me!''''
''Even if I haven't, it's only natural for me to have one, right? Shirley reasoned.
''Hell will break loose if I find out you're dating someone. Keep it in mind!'' Jean forewarned.
''May I ask what's the problem with that? Isn't it my right to have a boyfriend? Shirley smiled cynically.
''You're far too young! That is the reason. When you're mature enough, it's fine, as long as the person you get is affluent and educated, not someone from the slum!'' Jen exclaimed fiercely.
''Wealthy and educated, even if I don't love him? Shirley objected.
''You are correct. Even if you don't care for him. ''Love can be learned,'' Jean said.
''You have been controlling my life ever since, and it appears to me that you are already prescribing what sort of man to marry at this early stage,'' Shirley remarked.
Jean slapped Shirley hard, enraged at her daughter's apparent daring in responding to her.
''You really love slapping me, mom,'' Shirley said coldly.
Jean tugged her daughter's hair in rage and was only stopped when Shirley's father and elder sister interfered.
''Get inside your room, or I'll lose patience with you!'' Atty. Miguel Reyes said to Shirley. He was her father.
''You are all united in your prejudice!'' Shirley yelled.
''I truly don't like the way your tongue sounds. I'll belt you if you don't get inside your stupid room! '' Miguel yelled.
Shirley stormed into her room, turning her back on her parents.
''Keep an eye on your daughter. I believe she is already in a relationship. Did you notice how she responded when the subject of boyfriends came up?'' Miguel told his wife.
''She wouldn't dare!'' Jean responded.
''Make certain you do! She might be in the same boat as you!'' Miguel yelled.
Jean's anger for her husband burned brightly in her eyes.
