Mom walked slowly towards the lake home door as Candy ran inside, calling out for (Y/n). (Y/n) was waiting for her little sister and she scooped the younger girl into her arms. Candy let out a happy giggle, whining about the life being squeezed out of her. Mom's gaze was soft and warm as she looked at her kids, and she couldn't help herself from joining the hug. It had been too long since they'd seen (Y/n) and their reunion was long overdue.

The Strike Force filed into the building after them but they kept their distance. They'd been a foreboding presence not that long ago but now they just felt like added security with how they hung around the girls. Mom no doubt enjoyed their company more than the demons—a fact she made (Y/n) very aware of—but Candy didn't like having brick walls to talk to.

They were standing in the basement as Error and Swap spoke to Dream, Nightmare, and Theodore about the plan. The other demons were scattered throughout the house getting ready for their final mission on Earth. The air was abuzz with what was going to happen soon, and despite the excitement about the finality of what was to come, it still weighed heavily on them. There was a very real chance not all of them were going to make it back—hell, there was a chance all of them were going to their deaths—and mixed feelings were rampant. The mix of positivity and negativity made both Kings strong, but even they were uneasy about what was to come.

Error got what he needed out of Epic and sent him and Cross back to Graham. There was a limit to how much Epic could help, so Error was forced to play within the perimeters of his contract or risk violating it—and Cross made sure he didn't even toe that line. But everything was set for the final encounter with Vincent Graham and his demons, and once Cross came back, they would finally end this. It was a long time coming, but perhaps that was a good thing. Everybody wanted this to be over, and while the fear of death was still present, that made everyone less reserved about dragging this out or hesitating to do what needed to be done.

But since this was going to be the last time (Y/n) ever saw her family—regardless of how this ended—she wanted her last preparatory moments to be spent with them. She'd been hugging them for the past 5 minutes, and Candy was getting restless. "Release me!" she whined, prying at both older women's arms. Mom stepped back to allow the kid to breathe as (Y/n) smiled at the pair. Her smile was stuck to her face like glue since they arrived, but as she gazed at them with love, all she could think about was: she was never going to see them again. Mom noticed the way her eyes watered, and Nightmare's head shot up at the influx of negativity.

He teleported over, subtly placing a hand on (Y/n)'s back to comfort her. Mom's gaze narrowed on the Demon King but he kept his expression blank. "You are turning your sendoff depressing, angelus."

"I know, I know," she whispered, wiping quickly at her eyes as if to stop the tears before they leaked out. She'd told him earlier she wanted only happy thoughts when she saw her family for the last time so they'd remember her at her best but that was much easier said than done. Nightmare sighed, a tentacle running up her arm soothingly. Mom's eyes narrowed impossibly further and she batted Nightmare's tentacle away from her daughter. The King bristled at this but (Y/n) smiled. "It's alright, Mamá."

"I don't like the way it touches you, hija," Mom mumbled through pursed lips.

Nightmare smirked, opening his mouth to spill what was really going on between his summoner and him, but (Y/n) beat him to it. "Actually, we're on good terms now." Nightmare rose an inquisitive browbone at her but she kept her gaze on her mother. 'On good terms' was a very strange way of saying 'mates'.

"Is it still going to kill you?" Mom asked, a brief flash of surprise crossing her face.

"Well, sí, but-"
