After the summer of 1985 I wasn't the same.
I was in shot gun as Steve Harrington drove our best friend, Robin Buckley to school. There was a pep rally that day and Robin was freaking out about it.
"Robin, are you listening?" Steve asked as Robin was getting ready
"Uh yes"
"What did I just say?" Steve asked again
"Something about an apartment?" Robin tried to remember the conversation. Steve told Robin how we were thinking of getting an apartment together.
"Cut me some slack please" Robin complained. "Your love life is one of labyrinthine complexity. It is 7:00 in the morning, we have the stupid pep rally,
and I woke up looking like a corpse""You're worried about a pep rally?" I smirked as I looked at her through the mirror
"You're worried about a pep rally?" Steve repeated
"Expect me to believe that?" Steve scoffed
"Yeah? So?"
"This is about Vickie" Robin confessed.
"You gotta stop pretending to be someone else when you're around her. You just gotta be yourself" Steve encouraged her.
I snickered "You're literally quoting me to me. You do realize that" Robin informed him
"Maybe you need to listen to yourself. Ever think about that?" Steve retorted "I listened. Look at me.
Boom. Back in business""It's not the same thing. Okay?" Robin sighed
"You ask out a girl and she says no. Maybe your ego's a little bruised. I ask out the wrong girl, and bam, I'm a town pariah""I'd buy that, except Vickie is definitely not the wrong girl" I shrugged as I pulled out my nail file. Today, Steve and I had to go to work. I wore a nice shirt with my Family Video vest over it.
"We just don't know that, do we?" Robin asked
"She returned Fast Times paused at 53 minutes, 5 seconds. Know who pauses Fast Times at 53 minutes, 5 seconds? People who like boobies, Robin!" Steve shouted
"Ew. Disgusting" I pretended to throw up when Steve said the word Boobies
"Gross. Don't say boobies"
"It's not a big deal, okay? I like boobies. You like boobies. Vickie definetly likes boobies" Steve laughed
We arrived at the high school. It was packed with people. Just like how it was when Steve and I went to high school. "Call me if something happens okay Rob?" I rolled down my window
"Will do. Thanks guys I'll see you later" Robin took a deep breath before walking into the crowd of high schoolers.

Steve and I arrived at the Family Video store. "Are we still on for tonight?" Steve asked as he opened up the store
I shrugged "I don't see why we shouldn't be"
"Well because you've been in this whole mood or something ever since Hopper died" Steve sighed as he opened the door for me.
"Thanks" I muttered as I went into the store. "It's nothing. I just haven't been sleeping that great and I have this massive headache"
"We don't have to go if you don't want to" Steve said as we went over to the counter.
"I'm going. I promised Lucas I would go for him" I quickly said
"Okay okay" Steve put his hands up in surrender. "I was thinking we could go out for spring break. Maybe take trip to California or Cincinnati. Especially since your birthday is coming up"
"I don't know if I want to, Steve" I sighed as I sat on the counter.
"You don't want to do anything anymore" Steve scoffed
I rolled my eyes. It felt like almost every other day, Steve and I were arguing. It wasn't him. It was me. He was right. I didn't want to do anything anymore. I bit my tongue. If I said something, it would've started an argument. And now was not the place for an argument.
"I'm sorry" I muttered, fighting back tears.
Steve walked over to me and pulled me into a hug "I love you, Sherrie. You know that right?"
I smile and I kiss his cheek "I know. You tell me all the time. I love you too. It's just that after my parents died I couldn't expect my life to get any worse. And then Hopper died and he was like a father figure. Everyone around me just dies"
"I'm not gonna die on you. I promise. I couldn't leave you all on your own" Steve cupped my hand with his cheek.
After a second, the phone started ringing. I let go of Steve and I answer the phone "Hello welcome to Family Video. My name is Sherrie Bennet. How can I help you?"
"Sherrie? It's Dustin" my cousins muffled voice spoke
"Aren't you supposed to be in school, Dusty Bun?" I smirked
"Very funny. Put Steve on the phone" Dustin demanded
I rolled my eyes and I gave Steve the phone and I whispered softly "It's Dustin"
Steve groaned "Just move your date this one time.
Come on" Dustin begged him"What, to hang out with you and Eddie 'the freak' Munson? Uh, yeah, I'll pass" Steve scoffed
"You're just iealous 'cause I have another older male friend"
"Ew. Ugh. Whatever. I'm not canceling my date with Sherrie. We haven't gone out since valentine's day, Dipwad" Steve argued.
It finally hit me. For some reason, Dustin was trying to get Steve to cancel our date tonight to hang out with Eddie the freak Munson.
"Oh, I got some customers. Call you back" Steve quickly hung up the phone.
"What was that about?" I asked as I was assisting some customers
"Dustin trying to get me to cancel our date. Something about Eddie Munson and that hellfire shit" Steve shrugged "It doesn't matter because I'm not canceling it"

"Does it bother you that, like, we might win a championship right after you graduated?" I teased Steve as we walked into the gym
"Yeah, that's an interesting point. Thank you so much for bringing that up, Sherrie" Steve said sarcastically. He held my hand and led us through the crowd and we took our seats near the Band.
"Everyone now please rise for our national anthem.
Singing for us tonight, we have a very special guest. All the way from Nashville, our very own Tammy Thompson!" The principal announcedSteve, Robin and I all gave each other the look.
"O say can you see" Tammy started singing very off key.
I covered my mouth with my hand to keep myself from laughing.
"Told you. Muppet" Steve whispered to Robin.
"Okay, she does sound like a Muppet" Robin agreed.
"Wow. She sounds amazing, doesn't she?" A girl from behind us asked in awe
"And the rockets red glares
The bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night
That our flag was still there
O say does that star spangled..."After Tammy sang the national anthem, Steve and I started laughing uncontrollably. The Dance team did their performance and the cheer squad performed their routine at Halftime right after the Dance Team. I went down to both of the teams after their performances since I was friends with a lot of them.
"You guys were amazing" I smiled
"Thanks Sherrie it's so good to see you!" Chrissy hugged me.
I hugged Chrissy back. "It's good to see you too, Chrissy" I smiled. We made some small talk together. "I'll see you around"
After talking to Chrissy- I walked up to my friend Bianca from the Dance Team "Sherrie!"
"Bianca! How are you doing?" I asked as I hugged her
"I'm doing great! We miss having you on the team" Bianca hugged me back "Are you and Steve still together?"
"Yeah. We are" I smiled. "Speaking of which I gotta go. I'll see you soon"
"Alright bye Sherrie"
"Bye Bianca"
I took Steve's hand and we walked back to our seats. We were down two points by the end of the game. It was all up to Lucas. "Come on Lucas!" I shouted "Get your head in the game!"
Steve and I anxiously hold hands and we watch. Just as the buzzer went off, Lucas scored us the points we needed, Making us the champions
"We did it!" Steve yelled as he picked me up and spun me around and kissed me. We ran down the bleachers to congratulate Lucas.
"Lucas you were amazing!" I hugged him
"Thanks Sher. At least someone came to see me" Lucas hugged me back and frowned.
He was talking about Dustin, Lucas and Mike. "How about we go get some ice cream?" I suggested
"Nah. That's okay. I'm going to an after party at Jason's house" Lucas shook his head "You can come if you want"
Jason and I make eye contact for a brief moment. "No that's okay. I'm going to Steve's house afterwards"
"Okay. I'll see you later" Lucas said before he went over to his team.
I took Steve's hand and we went out of the school and to Steve's car.
