Newt has been by my side since the morning and even though I still hated him, I kind of got used to him. He was a pretty laid-back person, which I liked. I still get this aching feeling of proving myself to him that I am more than a weak girl to him.
The first job he gave me was the slicers job.
"Aaah fresh meat." I heard a voice and saw a figure standing in a pen with different animals surrounding him. "Welcome to the first job of the day, Cassie."
"Thank you." I responded back. The guy introduced himself as Winston.
"You can go now Newt, I got her." Winston told Newt who was standing a few feet away from me. "You know I never miss a Greenies first job." A smirk laid on his lip and Winston gave in a chuckle.
Winston nodded his head at a shed in the back, silently telling me to follow him. The first thing I noticed was the smell of fresh flesh. There was a thick stench of blood in the air. A metallic tang that cling to your skin.
I almost threw up when I saw bunnies and chickens without skins laying on a table. Blood dripping of a butcher knife next to it.
"I should not have eaten so much breakfast." I told the two guys who were snickering at my reaction.
"We will just get right into it, okay?" Winston told me. I swallowed and walked a little bit further into the shed. Newt made himself comfortable on a chair in the corner. He stretched his feet out and crossed his arms over his chest.
He had an amused smile on his face. I gave him a death-stare, which made his smile go even wider.
Winston got right into his work, cutting open a bunny and taking out everything that cannot be eaten. I turned my back to Winston quickly and saw Newt watching my every movement.
I tried not to show it, I really did. I wanted to show Newt that I can do it, but my stomach can hold it only for so long. I swallowed a big lump and turned back to Winston who was talking this whole time. I might not have heard a single thing, but we all know this is not my job.
Winston knows it and Newt definitely knows it. I looked at a far end corner where different animals sat in a small corner. There hang a sign with 'Today' written on it. I stepped closer to it and found a pig and a small bunny.
I looked up to the sign again and to the two animals.
"Ah, those are the animals we will eat today." Winston told me. "Could you grab the bunny for me?"
I looked down at the small bunny. It was white and had a small black spot around its eye. I grabbed it up and held it in my arms. I started walking towards Winston with the little creature in my arms.
As I took more and more steps towards Winston, my eyes never leaving the bunny. I stopped in the middle of the room. I looked up at Winston and saw him working hard on his animal. I heard Newt shift in his chair.
"Killer." He said with a little bit of danger in his voice.
I gave him my best puppy eyes, making my lip quiver.
"But he is so sweet." I told him in the softest voice. I looked down at the bunny again who was laying peacefully in my arms.
Winston walked up to me with his arms wide open to receive the bunny. "And he will be very sweet in our bellies."
Before he could take him out of my arms I took a step back. Cradling the sweet thing more into my chest.
"Don't take-"
"Don't name him." Newt broke my sentence.
"Unfortunately for you, I did." I said proudly. "His name is now Freddy."
The two boys gave in a grunt. Newt brushed a hand through his hair in frustration and Winston just turned around to finish his job with the animal.
"She is all yours, Newt." Was the last thing he said before chopping of the head of the chicken. I averted my eyes quickly from that to Newt.
He held up his hand in front of him and slowly making his way towards Freddy and I. I backed away more into the corner of the shed.
"Come on, Killer." I knew we needed the bunny for food, but it was just so soft. Even when I looked at Newt I saw a glint in his eyes. He enjoyed this. Asshole.
I made a beeline for the door with Freddy still in my arms. I ran over the field with an audience watching from their workstations. Newt was yelling from behind me.
I ran all the way into the woods, I turned around to see Newt still hot on my heels. I didn't pay attention to my foot-placement and dropped down on the ground. I made impact with the hard ground, but made sure Freddy was unharmed.
He jumped out of my arms and ran deeper into the forest. I followed him with my eyes, seeing him hopping away with a smile on my face.
"Happy now?" I saw a hand move in my vision and I gladly took it. Newt pulled me up with ease. Even if he was lanky, he sure had some hidden strength inside of him.
"Very." I gave him a loopy smile.
Newt still stood in front of me and I wiped my hair out of my face with my hand. Newt gave in a slight chuckle.
He moved his hand to my face and moved his thump over my cheek.
"Dirt." He simply said.
We eventually made our way back to the camp. We tried out every other job and I got to know everyone around the glade.
I finally decided that I liked being a track-hoe. Not because it was the closest to the maze, totally not the reason...
As I was working on the tomatoes, I saw a young boy walking in and out of the box. He must be a slobber. The boy didn't look a day older than 12. I felt really bad for him, but tried not to think much of it.
I still had a plan in my head and I don't need emotional attachment right now.
I averted my eyes back to the tomatoes that I was working on. I was sitting on my knees in the dirt. My long blond hair was getting into my face every single time. I was this close to just cut a part of my shirt and make a band out of it. But seeing the clothing everyone was wearing, I knew they only get one pair.
I heard a chuckle from Newt who was working beside me. I turned my head towards him and raised my eyebrows at him. His smile never faded and shook his head from side to side and started working on the tomatoes.
That was my last straw.
"Okay, I am done." I stood up and walked towards the kitchen where Frypan was working on dinner.
