Chapter 74

One week later
Maddie's POV

It's been a week since I got out of the hospital, a week since the accident, a week since the Impala hasn't sat in its spot in the driveway.

Uncle Zach has been staying here the last week and Sam and Kat have stopped in a couple times.

Dad was supposed to fly out yesterday but the flight was delayed so he didn't get to board the plane until a couple hours ago.

Everyone has been a big help this week since I still can't move my arm at all without it feeling like it's being ripped off my body.

Duke has been my rock, helping me bathe and get dressed, sleep comfortably in the bed and done quite literally everything with Luxe and the animals.

He's also driven me to my doctors appointments and the drug store to pick up prescriptions.

It's safe to say he takes care of me.

But as of right now, I was laying in the bed trying to sleep.

With Moose at my side and Tigger on Duke's pillow, I stared at the tv that reflected light of Sam and dad's old videos that played quietly.

I checked the time to see it was 11:08PM.

I sat up and sighed, standing up.

I opened the door and went downstairs where Zach and Duke sat.

They were talking but quickly went silent.

"Why aren't you in bed?" Zach asked.

"Cause I can't sleep. I feel oddly awake right now" I replied.

"What are you two doing down here?" I asked.

"Talking about your dad" Zach said. "Talking about summer" Duke said.

They said it at the same time and then looked at each other.

"Yeah, about both" Duke forced a smile.

"Y'all are really fuckin weird" I laughed, grabbing a water bottle.

I slid it across the counter to Duke who opened it and slid it back over to me.

"Do you want me to bring anything upstairs?" He asked.

"No I think I'm gonna go sit out back" I said and they nodded.

I walked out the back door and sat on the swing looking out into the backyard.

Across the street, there was a house with a light on, a mother and baby dancing were visible through the silhouette.

In another house, a couple arguing and then going their separate ways.

"It's crazy how different everyone is" a voice said from behind me.

I turned and Ryker was walking up next to me.

"Couldn't sleep either?" I asked.

"Nah. I saw you come outside through my window, I was watching the street" he said.

"What do you think is gonna happen once you and Duke move away?" He asked.

"Whatcha mean?" I asked and patted the spot next to me.

"I'll be home by myself for a year, you two out of state" he said.

"Well hopefully by then, dad and the kids have decided to move back. But if not, I don't really know. It kills me to abandon my little brother for a whole year" I said.
