As it was starting to get closer to dinner time I started getting ready to go to Dairy Queen with Dally and Ponyboy. I took a shower and combed through my short blonde hair, and put on the dress Sodapop had gotten me that morning. When I finished getting ready I went downstairs and out to the yard where both of them were waiting.

They were both smoking a cigarette while they were waiting for me. Ponyboy stomped out his cigarette and smiled at me and said "ready to go?" I smiled back and said "yes" and all three of us started to walk to the Dairy Queen. As we were walking, Ponyboy said "I never got a chance to catch your name yesterday, I'm Ponyboy by the way." I said "I'm Lizzy."

We arrived at the Dairy Queen and were seated at a booth, Ponyboy sat next to me and Dally across. Dally was still sending me suspicious looks, as if he still didn't trust me. I tried not to look back at Dally, but it was hard, for months all I had thought about was him, and now he was right in front of me, and I had to act like I just met him.

I couldn't take it anymore and decided to go to the bathroom and clear head. I said "excuse me, I'll be right back." Ponyboy replied "okay." And Dally just kept giving me a cold stare. I started walking to the bathroom, as I was about to reach it, I felt a hand grab roughly onto my arm. I turned to see Dally.

I gave him a questioning look, trying to hide the quickened beating of my heart and said "what are you doing?" He continued giving me a cold stare that gave me butterflies in my stomach. After a few moments he said "I'm still figuring out if I should trust you around the gang." I answered immediately "you can." He then said "well I guess we'll know soon enough." With that he walked away and back to the booth, I stood there for a few moments before I continued walking to the bathroom.

I had to calm down, I couldn't have Dally figure out my secret, or get suspicious. It was harder than I had daydreamed it would be, every time I was with him I wanted to break out into a smile. I hoped my eyes weren't giving me away, but I knew they probably were. I took a minute to calm my racing heart, and started walking back to the table.

As we were eating I tried to keep looking down at the table, I continued to feel Dally's cold stare. He eventually spoke in his thick New York accent that made my heart throb "I never told you my name, Dallas Winston-Dally." I stayed quiet since he already knew my name.

When we finished eating we started walking back to the Curtis brothers house. When we arrived Ponyboy asked "do you want to sleep on the couch again tonight, if you need a place to stay?" I smiled at Ponyboy and we walked into the house.

Ponyboy then yelled to the living room "hey Darry, Lizzy is staying on the couch tonight." Darry yelled back "alright." We then entered the living room and saw the rest of the gang.

Sodapop immediately smiled at me and patted the empty spot on the couch next to him and said "hey Lizzy, come sit down." I walked and sat next to him on the couch and said "thank you Sodapop."

After a few moments I looked over at Dally, who was still giving me a cold stare. I quickly looked away, embarrassed. After a few moments it seemed Sodapop was trying to start up a conversation. He asked "So Lizzy, how old are ya?" I was hesitant to answer this, I was worried Dally would hear it and think the age gap was too great. I answered "I'm 14, but I turn 15 in a few months." He said "I'm 16, but I turn 17 in about 2 weeks." I had already known this information from the book.

After a few hours passed the gang slowly started to leave until it was just the Curtis brothers and I. Darry was in his room, and Ponyboy was already asleep in the room he and Sodapop shared. Sodapop was the only one still awake, we were both watching TV. Sodapop smiled at me and said "do plan on staying here longer." I smiled back and said "if I'm welcome to" he continued smiling and said "of course you're welcome to, in fact I hope you stay longer."

We continued watching TV and then Sodapop said "do you wanna come with me to the DX tomorrow?" I replied "sure." He then smiled and said "alright, make sure you're ready by 7:00 am, and I'm going to go to bed, good night Lizzy." I smiled and said "good night Sodapop." He walked away to his and Ponyboy's room.

I laid down on the couch and pulled the blanket over myself. When I closed my eyes all I could see was Dally, I wanted him to like me so badly, but all he ever gave me was a cold stare and distrust. I hoped he would show up at the DX tomorrow.

I woke up at 6:00 am, I took a quick shower and changed into my dress, around 6:30 am I heard the Curtis brothers started waking up as well. Sodapop came out from the hallway dressed in his DX uniform by 6:45. He smiled and said "ready to go Lizzy?" I smiled back and said "yes." Sodapop then said goodbye to the his brothers and we left.

When we arrived I noticed Steve smiling at Sodapop. Steve yelled out to Sodapop "hey buddy!" Sodapop smiled back and said "Hey Steve."

Steve's attention then turned to me "hey Lizzy, don't think we've officially met, Sodapop told me your name, I'm Steve by the way." I smiled at him and said "it's nice to meet you Steve." Steve then turned his attention back to Sodapop and said "I gotta go work on a car, will ya manage the store?" Sodapop nodded to Steve, who then went out to the garage where the car was.

The store was pretty busy, filled with girls who flirting with Sodapop. Sodapop would occasionally look at me and smile and roll his eyes to show his annoyance with all the girls. I would smile back. I kept feeling bad for thinking Sodapop was shallow when I had read the book, he was deeper than I had thought, but he still couldn't compare to Dally, but I could easily see me and Sodapop being friends.

I then hear the bell above the door ring to signal an incoming customer, I see Dally start walking over to the counter, pushing ahead of the line.
