Stay in the Memories

The first thing Abby loved was love.

The second thing Abby loved was fighting.

The third thing was hatred. Abby didn't love that, but it was necessary for survival.

The last thing Abby loved was the girl. And after that, love never really crossed her mind.

THE PAST
The first thing was love.
Abby was born in a small town in Spain, surrounded by dozens of relatives who pinched her cheek and swaddled her to sleep. It was a community where everyone knew everyone, and her parents were the most loved of them all.
Mama was a rough, headstrong woman who shooed grown men off her lawn with nothing but a broom. Papa was a quiet man from Paris, with an accent that Abby always tried to mimic. Both parents main languages were different, but man, they spoke with their bodies.
Abby's father tried to make Abby learn more French than Spanish. But Abby's mother hated this idea. So by the age of six, Abby knew Spanish, French, and English.
She was smart. And beautiful. Even grown men were obsessed with her looks (which she realizes now isn't a good thing). But most importantly, everyone loved her. And she loved everyone. It was hard to see an evil world when there wasn't anything evil about it.

By age 11 Abby moved to Paris with her father, mother and her sisters, June and Alvie.
School was an interesting place for Abby with her sisters. June was a quiet, straight A's girl who was..well..invisible. Alvie on the other hand stood out like a sore thumb. She was blind, and Abby knew how to defend her.

The second thing was fighting.
"Your sisters a stupid idiot." A schoolgirl said to Abby as she passed her in the hallway. "El stupido ran right into a wall. Get that thing a walking stick or something." She laughed.
Abby glared her nostrils and clenched her fist.
"What's wrong? Did I offend you?" The girl teased, giggling with her friends.
Why did Abby love to fight? Because it felt good.
Abby slammed the girl against the wall and threw a punch to her jaw. The other girl might've gotten in a throw but Abby pinned her weak body to the floor and bashed her head against the ground.
Students crowded them, shouting and cheering for Abby.
Abby licked her lips and smiled, watching as the girl pleaded out. Abbys knuckles were cracked and bloodied. Her pain was in no comparison on how good it felt to defend her sister.
"Abby stop!"
"Get off her!"
"You're killing her!"
Abby fluttered her eyes and stood to her feet. She wiped her nose and the blood from her knuckles smeared on her face. She was monstrous.
She liked it.

"I can't believe you did that," Alvie said, holding onto Abby so she wouldn't walk into anything. They walked home from school after Abby was screamed at by the principal.
"I defended you. I helped you." Abby grumbled.
"Just don't. You only cause trouble." Alvie said. "Please Abby, you hurt yourself."
"I am fine." Abby hissed. She turned to Alvie. "Can't you see I'm doing this for you! I love you so much, I cant just sit here and listen to them talk about you like this." Abby nearly yelled.
"Stop it Abby. You're sick." Alvie said.
"I am not sick! Don't listen to Papa when he says that. You know better than him." Abby said. "Hell, they were right. You are stupid."
"That's not fair." Alvie whispered.
"Not fair?" Abby asked. Then she yelled, "not fair!"
Alvie covered her ears with her hands. "You are sick." She said again, then found the front door of their home and slammed it behind her.
Abby stared at the door. Her face was bloodied, her hair matted. Anger burning in her eyes.
She wasn't sick. She wasn't mad.
