Breakfast behind them, Hongjoong felt a low lying sense of irritation bubbling inside, simply for the fact that after such a light hearted, enjoyable morning with his family, it was now suddenly been ruined by having to drive Seonghwa to his in-laws' motel, and all the memories of his relationship with them were sucking the happiness out of him like a disease.

'You okay, babe?' Seonghwa asked, reaching over and putting a brief hand over his as they stopped at the traffic lights, just around the corner from their destination.

Forcing a smile onto his face, he nodded, not quite able to bring himself to lie out loud.

Not that he need have, for as the light turned green and they rounded the turn, pulling into the visitors parking, the moment he stopped and turned off the car, Seonghwa was already reaching out and gently turning his face to him, eyes seeing it all without a single word needing to be said.

'Joong, we didn't need to do this...'

'No, we do,' he said, shaking his head as he reached up and smoothed his hand over Seonghwa's covering his cheek. 'Your parents are going back home, and we don't know when they'll see Nabi again.'

The news had come the night before in the form of a heavy-spirited phone call from Seonghwa's father. Unfortunately, with it, came the realisation that he would have to put aside his own problems with his mother-in-law, suck it up and grin and bear it. Nabi would only be a baby once, for a very short period of time, and Seonghwa's parents, were still, Seonghwa's parents...

Nabi's grandparents...

Her only, grandparents.

'Joong, we can still—'

'You go up with Naeun,' he said, squeezing his husband's hand, before taking it off of his cheek. 'I brought some research papers. I can wait here—'

'Hongjoong, I'm not leaving you in the car,' Seonghwa interrupted with the hint of a tone that said, he couldn't believe he was needing to say so. 'Come with me. My mother's not here anyway.'

Frowning, he glanced at the building. 'Why...?' he murmured, with the hint of a confused question behind it...

Anger burned in Seonghwa's eyes. 'Because she made her position very clear, and so did I.'

'But Seonghwa, she's your mother—'

'And you're my husband,' he shot back. 'Joong, I won't accept anyone treating you any less than what you deserve,' he said gently, 'which is why...' he murmured softly, voice trailing off mid sentence as he leant across the centre console and pressed his lips gently to his, holding his hand in his lap...

It had his heart aching as he struggled to grapple with him still refusing to see his mother, however he did not have long to think of an argument, for too quickly, when their lips parted, Seonghwa pressed one more chaste peck upon his lips, before unbuckling his seatbelt for him and dumping his phone in his hands.

'You're not waiting in the car,' Seonghwa finished abruptly, and with that, he was suddenly beside him one moment, and outside the next, coming around and opening his door to drag him out too.

'Hwa...' he complained as he was pushed around to the back seat.

However just as he was about to start listing all the reasons why it was a bad idea for him to go up with him, suddenly, a brand new voice interjected, and when he looked up, he saw his father-in-law walking over with a welcoming, dad-like grin on his face that he couldn't help but link with the one he saw on Seonghwa's these days too...

'I didn't think you'd be here until later,' Mr. Park said, a paper bag of recycling in his hands that he stacked with the motel's others, before wandering over to their car. 'Hongjoong, son, good to see you again,' he said cheerfully.

He reached out and shook his hand, still feeling a tad uncomfortable, despite the fact that he'd seen him a few times since the day he had ordered the man's wife out of his home.

'Where's mom?' Seonghwa asked from where his head was already stuck in the back seat with Nabi.

The man walked around to see inside, and the grin that grew on his face when he laid eyes on his granddaughter was immense. 'Out,' he murmured, apparently much distracted, for the moment Seonghwa picked Nabi up and brought her out of the car, Mr. Park's eyes lit up.

'Hello sweetheart~' the man gasped, graciously accepting her into his wanting arms. 'Oh you're getting even bigger! Look at you!'

Smiling to himself, he watched his daughter in his arms, looking curiously at him and reaching up to touch the rough stubble on his face. She really was getting bigger, and more and more keen to move around, already starting to wriggle the way they'd learned she did when she wanted to be put down so she could crawl around and explore.

The moment she started becoming restless in her grandfather's arms, Seonghwa plonked her teddy into the embrace too, and it immediately distracted her, driving her to grab at its arms and the lace bow Wooyoung had tied around its neck, poking it in the eyes too for good measure.

'Oh I can't get over how adorable you are,' Mr. Park cooed to her, kissing her on the head, and behind him, Seonghwa emerged from the car with Nabi's bag of things.

His heart tugged with a sense of unease when his husband came over and put a gentle hand on his back, knowing what was coming.

'Shall we go up?' Seonghwa asked.

He really wished he could have just stayed in the car.

'Let's,' Mr. Park replied with a grin and eyes for Nabi and Nabi alone.

Mrs. Park really was out, but it didn't make him feel any less uncomfortable in a space that was not his own, where he was sure the walls held memories of foul things spoken about him. Sitting on the floor boards, he was keeping a close eye on Nabi crawling about after her rattle as she played, worried she might hurt herself on the hard floor, and every time Mr. Park gave her a toy, he felt bad when she would immediately take it and start bringing it to show him in instead.

'I see, sweetie,' he breathed softly as she brought him the present Mr. Park had given her—a holding ring with a cute little cactus with a smiling face dangling from it, that rattled when it was shaken. His heart melted when she crawled straight up to his lap, putting her hands up onto his calf folded before him, and then almost trying to grab onto his shirt like she wanted to stand, even though he knew she wasn't quite there yet.
