The noise of protest that filled the basement was so loud; the doctor had to use his special trick.

“Fingers on lips!” he shouted. Everyone stopped and looked around in confusion.

“Wha..?” Dean began.

“I said; everyone put their fingers on their lips” the doctor raised his finger to his lips and placed them there in demonstration. Sam was the first to follow with Dean taking his lead and John and Castiel not far behind.  Everyone had their fingers on their lips except Sherlock which the doctor let slide.

“Number one; anyone who shouts gets a time out, number two; Dean is not doing any self-sacrificing as long as i’m alive, number three; you all go home” the doctor turned and headed inside his TARDIS. Everyone else followed.

“So that’s it?” Sam marched up the ramp towards the doctor “You’re just not going to help?”

“It’s not as simple as that Sam” the doctor sighed “How many times do i have to say it? Emily died to save us, so if she lives you die”

“So?” Dean shrugged “It may have escaped your notice doc, but we don’t mind giving ourselves up to save other people!”

“What can i say that will change your minds?” the doctor’s head filled with emotions: regret, sympathy, sadness, grief but most of all guilt.

“I’ve got something” Sherlock spoke for the first time that night “Do you really want to ignore Emily’s dying wish?”

Everyone looked at him.

“The great Sherlock Holmes has spoken” the doctor turned around to face the control panel “Now everyone can go home, Sam and Dean, i’ll give you a lift if you want”

“No, we’re ok thanks” Dean replied with anger “C’mon Sam”

“Sorry” Sam felt like he should apologise for his brother. They both left with a polite ‘see ya’ to Sherlock and John.

“Dean, i need to speak with you” Castiel followed them out.

“John, we should get back to the case” Sherlock muttered and begun to head out but stopped when he realised John was upset “What’s the matter?”

“I thought for a minute that we might save her” John swallowed “But everyone’s giving up” he pushed past Sherlock, didn’t even look at the doctor, and left.

“Look after him, Sherlock” were the doctor’s parting words as his last friend exited.
