JESS P.O.V.
"So that's what this is about." Dad sighed before pulling over to the side of the road. "Jess, look at me." He said as he turned the engine off. I reluctantly turned and faced him and our green eyes met. "Jessica, I loved your mother. But she is gone, and she has been for a long time. But I promise you I never have and never will forget her or Ben. No matter who may come into my life I will always remember them. But, I want you to give Ian a chance. He's just a little kid, and he basically just lost his mom too. You are more like him than you realize. Just gibe him a chance. Please. For me." He took my face in his hands as he spoke and I nodded.
"I'll give him a chance Dad. I promise. Starting tonight." I promised quietly and he nodded. We drove back to the motel room and when we walked in, I was surprised to see a small stack of presents sitting on the table. Ian was colorimg something and Uncle Sam was helping him. "What are these?" I asked pointing to the presents and Uncle Sam looked up grinning.
"They're presents. For you. One from each of us." He patted Ian on the shoulder and Ian slowly stood ul and grabbed one of the packages off of the table along with the thing he had been coloring.
"Happy Birthday." He said shyly handing them to me. One was a home made card, the writing barely more than scribbles.
"Thanks Ian." K sakd meaning it as I sat in one of the chairs and unwrapping the package to find a pink I-pod shuffle with a lair of headphones.
"So you can listen to your music." He explained and I thanked him again. The other two gifts were from Dad and Uncle Sam ; Dad had gotten me a flip phone and Uncle Sam had gotten me my own laptop, so I could do my online school stuff on that one instead of his. All in all it was a pretty good birthday. And I did make an effort with Ian that night and I gained myself a brother that day. I was happy.
