The sun was shining brightly as Elizabeth and Anthony led little Alice through the rolling hills and dense forest that surrounded the castle. It was their second time exploring the countryside, and Alice's giggles and gasps of wonder were music to their ears. They had taken a shortcut that Anthony swore was quicker, but as they walked, the trees grew taller and the air grew thick with an eerie feeling."Perhaps we should turn back," Elizabeth said, her voice laced with concern. "It seems to be getting darker in here."
Anthony looked around, his eyes scanning the surroundings. "Nonsense, love. This shortcut will get us to the other side of the forest in no time."
But Elizabeth's instincts proved correct. The trees seemed to close in around them, casting long, ominous shadows on the ground. The rustling of leaves and snapping of twigs beneath their feet made it seem as though they were being watched.
Suddenly, Alice stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes wide with fear. "Mama, Papa, I don't like it here," she whispered.
Elizabeth knelt down beside her, hugging her close. "It's okay, sweetie. We'll go back soon, I promise."
But it was too late. A figure emerged from behind a cluster of bushes, wearing a bird mask similar to those worn during the plague. The black feathers and glassy eyes seemed to stare straight through them.
Anthony's eyes widened in horror as the man pounced, his blade flashing in the fading light. Elizabeth screamed as she watched her husband take a step back, his eyes locked on hers in a desperate plea for help.
But before she could react, the woman appeared out of nowhere, her own blade glinting in the dim light. She struck Anthony with precision, and he crumpled to the ground with a silent gasp.
Elizabeth's world went dark as she felt the pain rip through her back. She fell to the ground, her vision blurring at the edges. She heard Alice's terrified wails and tried to reach out to her daughter, but her arms felt heavy and unresponsive.
As she lay there, pretending to be already defeated, Elizabeth watched in horror as her husband took his last breaths. She felt a surge of anger and hatred towards these monsters who had brutally murdered her loved ones.
When she finally mustered the strength to look up, Elizabeth saw that the woman was staring down at Anthony's lifeless body, her mask glinting with an unsettling intensity. The man was nowhere to be seen, but Elizabeth knew he was nearby, waiting for his cue to strike again.
With a fierce determination burning within her chest, Elizabeth forced herself to play along, feigning lifelessness as best she could. She closed her eyes and remained still, praying that these monsters would take little Alice and leave them be.
As if sensing they had achieved their goal, the woman let out a cold laugh and nodded to someone off-camera. The man reappeared, his bird mask glinting in the fading light.
The couple exchanged a glance that sent shivers down Elizabeth's spine. They knew exactly who they had attacked – husband and wife – and exactly what they had done.
Without another word, they turned and disappeared into the darkness of the forest, taking little Alice by the hand. Elizabeth lay there for what felt like an eternity, listening to their footsteps fade into nothingness.
Only when she was certain they were gone did she slowly sit up, wincing in pain as she assessed her wounds. Anthony was gone. Her beautiful husband was gone. And little Alice was now at the mercy of these monsters.
With a fierce determination burning within her chest, Elizabeth knew exactly what she had to do next. She would find a way to escape this dark forest and track down these cowards who had taken everything from her. She would make sure they paid for their crimes – no matter what it took.
