Annabelle
THAT EVENING, AFTER everybody had left I couldn't sleep. Another perk of Stefan kidnapping me was that I could no longer sleep without nightmares.
So, I opted to head downstairs for a midnight snack. My bare feet hit the cold ground as I descended downstairs, quickly turning on the lights as I shuffled into the kitchen.
There were blood bags in the fridge so I quickly grabbed one, pouring it into a cup. I leaned against the sink, looking out into the night sky. The star sparkling brightly reminded me of when Bekah took me on a picnic and we sat and gazed at the stars.
Eventually, after I finished my glass of blood, I decided I wanted some chocolate-covered strawberries. I hummed as I pulled open the fridge, moving some blood bags to find human food my father bought for me. The carton of strawberries was in the back of the fridge and I found chocolate easily.
Rebekah made sure I was stocked up with chocolate, thankfully. Next, I squatted down as I opened a cabinet, slowly pulling out a pot. I cringed at the large cluttering, stopping for a second before tugging it out the rest of the way.
As I stood, I caught a reflection in the window above the sink. A loud scream left my lips as I turned on my heel, chucking the pan at the person out of reflex. They moved out of the way quickly, the pot clattering loudly against the hard, marble floor.
"Jesus, Uncle Finn, don't sneak up on me!" I whisper-yelled, holding a hand to my heart. Finn was laughing lightly, arms crossed over his chest as he leaned against the doorframe.
Suddenly, my father was in front of me with his hands clasped around my biceps. "What happened? Are you alright?" His eyes scanned over me, looking for any injuries. Surprisingly, he was still in his suit. The sleeves were rolled up to his elbows and his tie was discarded, probably in his closet. He must have been reading a book or newspaper.
"I'm fine," I brushed off his concerns, my eyes lifting to meet my other uncles standing behind us. A glare settled on my face as I looked at Finn, jabbing an accusing finger at him. "Uncle Finn decided it would be a good idea to stand behind me and watch me make chocolate-covered strawberries!"
"I did no such thing," Finn shook his head as Nik and Kol relaxed, the deadly look leaving their faces and being replaced with a teasing one. Dad's hands relaxed as he took a step back, leaning against the counter. Nik bent down, picking up a pan off of the floor.
"So you went Repunzel on him?" Kol asked, amused. I had gotten him caught up with Disney movies and we both enjoyed Rapunzel, even if he denies it. When I forced Nik to watch The Little Mermaid, he pretended to hate it but I could tell he enjoyed it. Dad, on the other hand, refused to pay attention and chose to read. Eventually, I annoyed him enough that he would send me out of the room.
"What's Rapunzel?" Finn asked, confused. A grin settled on my face.
"She's a princess," I explained quickly. "We can watch it sometime. It's Uncle Kol's favorite."
"It is not!" Kol defended himself. "At least I don't throw pans at people."
"I thought he was a murderer or something!" I defended myself, cheeks flushing a deep red.
"So you threw a pan at him?" Dad asked, amused.
"Yes! It was self-defense," I told him, earning a small laugh.
"Love, you do realize you are a vampire, right?" Nik asked, clearly finding this situation funny.
"Yes, well...well," I tried to come up with a defense but couldn't think of anything. In the end, I threw my hands up. "I give up. I'm making my chocolate-covered strawberries."
"Ann, it's almost one in the morning. Perhaps it is better if you wait until morning," Dad suggested but I quickly shook my head, placing the ban on the burner.
"I'm hungry now," I shrugged, holding out the chocolate bar, silently asking for help opening it. He complied, tearing off the packaging before handing it back to me.
"Well, I am going to sleep," Kol announced, turning on his heel and exiting the room. Nik didn't say anything but followed after him, no doubt going to sleep too.
"Don't make a mess," Dad told me, leaning down to press a kiss to the crown of my head. "And will not be dealing with the sugar rush."
"Yes, Dad," I resisted the urge to roll my eyes until he had left. Finn remained standing in the doorway, watching as I filled the pan up before turning on the burner. After that, I set the pot on the stove to begin boiling the water. We had a glass bowl that I then set over the top of the pot, placing the chocolate in to melt.
"What are you doing?" Finn asked me, pushing off the frame to sit down at the island.
"I'm melting the chocolate," I explained, grabbing a wooden spoon to stir. "If I do it like this, the chances of it burning are less."
"Ah," Finn nodded in understanding. "Do you want any help?"
"Could you wash the strawberries?"
"Sure," Finn nodded, making his way over to me and taking the strawberries from my outstretched hand. While he washed the strawberries off, I put the chocolate in the bowl. The water was boiling now, so it was time to melt it.
I used the wooden spoon to stir it, crushing it up into smaller chunks so it would melt faster. When I turned around, Finn was watching me closely. "What?" I gave him an odd look, confused. He finished washing the remaining strawberries, setting them on a paper towel.
"Nothing," Finn shook his head. "You just look so...innocent. That's all."
I hummed in response as I used a fork to pick up a strawberry and dip it in the warm chocolate. "Innocent? Hardly. I've seen enough death for a lifetime."
"You didn't deserve that. Any of this," Finn said.
"Maybe, maybe not."
"I'm sorry." I furrowed my eyebrows at him, confused about what he would be talking about.
"About what?" I asked him.
Finn cleared his throat, stepping away from me. "Just, for everything. I'm going to go to bed. I'll see you in the morning. Don't stay up too late, your father wouldn't hesitate to dagger me if you are grumpy tomorrow."
"Daggering is Nik's thing," I called out as he hurried out of the room, shoving his hands in his pockets. I was left alone in the silent, dark house. It reminded me of when I was trapped in the basement where Stefan was keeping me.
I sighed heavily as I wandered into the living room where I had convinced Nik to buy a TV. I flicked on all of the lights before retrieving a large pile of blankets. My strawberries were safely tucked on the end table, where I left them as I moved into the kitchen to grab a bar stool.
Once I got back to the living room, I placed it slightly in front of the couch on the left side. Then, I mimicked it on the right side before drapping a large blanket over it. It created a small fort but with a gap large enough that I could see the TV. I placed some blnakets on the floor for comfort before putting my strawberries in the fort.
However, the darkness and creaking of the house was beginning to freak me out. My eyes shifted around the room, searching for any danger. When I was reassured that the noises were just the wind or someone walking around upstairs, I ran up the large staircase, scrambling away from the dark downstairs.
I creeped down the hallway, not wanting to wake anyone else up again, before opening Kol's bedroom door. I knew he'd be the most willing to come sit downstairs wtih me. My father would have just told me to sleep in his room, so would Nik, and Bekah would talk with me for a while before taking me back to my room.
Kol was sprawled on his stomach, the room dark and creepy. I pointed the flash light on my phone at him, creeping into his room. "Uncle Kol," I whispered his name, leaning over him. When he didn't stir, I gently poked him. "Uncle Kol. Hello? Koala?"
Kol let out a low groan, peaking one eye open. "What is it?"
"Will you come sit downstairs with me?" I asked quietly.
"What?" He arched an eyebrow at me, tired eyes scanning over my face. "No. Go ask Elijah."
"No, Dad won't sit with me," I told him. "He'll just tell me to sleep in his bed."
"And you think I'm going to sit with you? It's the middle of the night," Kol hissed, though I knew he wasn't truly annoyed with me.
"Please," I begged. "You're my favorite uncle and its scary downstairs."
"Darling, you're a literal vampire and you think the dark is scary?" Kol question with a small laguh. Embarresed, my cheeks flushed as I crossed an arm over my chest.
"...No," I said after a minute. "I just want you to sit and watch Tangled."
"I'm not sitting downstairs in the middle of the night to watch a Disney movie," Kol let his eye shut again, on the verge of sleep.
"But I get nightmares if I sleep alone," I compliend, watching him sigh as he sat up.
"Fine," he agreed and I smiled brightly at him.
"Great!" I reached over, grabbing two of his pillows off his bed. "You grab the other two pillows and then you can go downstairs first."
"You sure you're not afradi of the dark, darling?" Kol teased, nonetheless compling as he grabbed the perfectly fluffed pillows and led the way downstairs.
