Carly was so confused. It had been two weeks since Marjorie had broken up with Reece. Nobody had been able to make head nor tail of Marjorie's reasoning and as more time passed, the nursery manager only seemed more and more desolate. She was clearly missing Reece, but she refused to even speak to him. Nothing about the situation made any sense.

Normally Carly loved covering at the sister nursery. She adored Reece with every fibre of her being and winding him up had often been the highlight of her day. Now, she dreaded being sent to cover because it meant that she was forced to watch him fall apart. Nothing she said reassured him and nothing she did even made him crack a smile. It was killing her to see him suffering so much.

Thankfully, she'd been assigned to The Knight Nursery all week and as she headed towards the office, she thanked the lord that it was finally Friday. She was just about to push the door open when she heard Marjorie's voice. Carly noticed immediately that she sounded upset, so she listened carefully to try and understand why. "I can't do that. I wouldn't even know where to start. Please, I did what you wanted, Reece is completely shattered and it's all because of me, isn't that enough?" Carly held her breath, clueless as to whose voice she might hear next. "You did the first thing I asked you to do, yes. You remember our conversation I'm sure. You're an intelligent woman, I'm sure you'll think of something. I want them to despise each other, understand?" It was Roger.

Marjorie didn't reply, at least not verbally. As Carly heard shuffling sounds, she realised that she needed to move, pronto. Just as she'd hidden herself around the corner she heard the office door swing open and slam shut, the noise echoing throughout the corridor. Once Roger's footsteps had faded away Carly quickly made her way into the office.

Marjorie was sat with her head in her hands, clearly distraught. She obviously hadn't noticed Carly's presence, so the young apprentice cleared her throat before quietly saying "Marjorie?" The nursery managers head snapped up suddenly, causing Carly to finally see just how drained she looked. "Yes my love?" Marjorie's smile was faltering as she looked lovingly at Carly, but she was trying so hard to fake it.

As Carly stared at the woman that she genuinely considered her second Mum, she made a decision. She wasn't going to ask her about what she'd just heard because she knew that Marjorie would just brush her off. Carly's detective skills were a source of pride for her so as she flashed her winning smile, she promised herself that she'd get to the bottom of this. "I just wanted to check if you'd signed my assignment off, I left it on your desk this morning." Marjorie nodded in response before grabbing the little yellow file that held Carly's coursework together. "Here you go darling." She sounded so tired it made Carly's heart hurt.

Once Carly was back in the toddler room, her mind really started to race. Marjorie had been forced to break up with Reece by Roger, but why? What else did he want her to do? Questions whizzed through her mind at a million miles an hour as she tidied the book corner. She'd known all along that Marjorie still loved Reece and now, she was certain that she could bring them back together. This mess could be fixed, along with two currently shattered hearts.

Roger wasn't someone that Carly knew much about. She'd barely even spoken to him since she'd worked at the nurseries and she was grateful for that. What she did know was that he was abusive, greedy and manipulative. Unfortunately, she also didn't realise that Roger was very aware of how much everyone adored Carly, how much they would do for her and what they would sacrifice.

If he ever needed a bargaining chip, she was it.

And he had big plans for her.
