Sam stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the jacket of his tux for the hundredth time. He couldn't believe that they had made it to this point. His and Gabriel's senior year was finally coming to a close. Tonight was their senior prom, and in a month, they would graduate. Things were going great. He had been able to stop taking most of his medication almost six months ago, only staying on his once a day antidepressant.
Sam was happy with his life. Especially with Gabriel. They had been together for almost two years now. Things had been rough at fir. Peoplele had not been kind to them when they found out. There had been a lot of threats and more than a few fights. For Sam, he could defend himself easily, and he would not hesitate to defend Gabriel as well, even though he was more than capable of taking care of himself. The problem was that if Gabriel was caught alone, he wouldn't. There had been a particularly bad fight last year between Gabriel and another boy. The boy had ended up in the hospital.
Gabriel hated himself for being able to hurt anyone that bad. He stopped defending himself after that, just accepting the abuse as if he deserved it for what he had done.
Sam had noticed lately that Gabriel had begun to sink back into his depression. He had gotten good at recognizing the signs. Gabriel was quieter than usual would zone out when they were together. He didn't sleep as much.it had been a while since Gabriel's last laps. It hadn't been awful, at least, the sleeves didn't come back out.
This time was making Sam worry, though. He had talked to Chuck, and he agreed that Gabriel needed more help than they could give him. He had made Gabriel start seeing his therapist again, but it didn't seem to be helping like it had before. Sam knew that he was going to get worse if something didn't change.
He heard a knock at his door, turning around to see the boy who had consumed his thoughts all day.
"I feel like a monkey in this suite. "
Gabriel smile, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. He walked into the room, standing beside Sam in front of the mirror.
"You make a very cute monkey though."
Sam could hear the sadness in his boyfriends voice. He slid his arm around Gabriel's waist, pulling him into a hug.
"Why won't you talk to me?"
Gabriel didn't bother asking what he meant, he was well aware of how close Sam was watching him. He just couldn't bring himself to explain what was going on in his head. He leaned into the hug, trying to accept the comfort Sam was offering. He didn't deserve it, but he wanted it all the same.
"Gabe?"
He shook his head, keeping his face buried in Sam's chest. He didn't want to talk now. He has spent the last hour trying to talk to his therapist, but he couldn't get the words out. He couldn't explain how he felt like a monster. How he had hurt someone bad enough to put them in the hospital. He couldn't tell her how it made him feel. As if he was the same as his brother. He didn't have the words to say how he felt like he was turning into Lucifer. If he couldn't tell her, he definitely was not going to tell Sam that. He didn't want to see the look on his face, or worse, hear confirmation of his thoughts. He was scared of how it made no sense, but how it felt so true.
Sam didn't pull away, he held the boy tighter, wanting to protect him from everything, but knowing even he could not protect him from his own mind.
Gabriel stepped back, trying his best to appear normal. He didn't really want to go tonight, but Sam had been looking forward to this for months. Gabriel was not going to take this away from him. He took Sam's hand, tugging him towards the door.
"Come on, dad and Michael want pictures before we go."
Sam followed behind him, gripping his hand tight. They walked down the stairs, being blinded by the flash of the cameras. Gabriel glared at his father, having almost tripped from the surprise.
