Alaz sat in the chair, his hand on his cheek, eyes fixed on Asi as she slept. His gaze was soft but filled with an overwhelming sadness, watching her breathe evenly, the only thing giving him a semblance of peace. Asi shifted on the bed, her brows furrowing before she woke up, her hand instinctively moving to her chest. Alaz quickly moved to her side, kneeling beside the bed, his movements gentle but desperate.

He saw her doing the one thing she always did when overwhelmed: hand on her chest, breathing in and out slowly, her eyes closed. Alaz's heart clenched at the sight.

"Are you okay?" he asked, his voice a tender whisper, barely audible.

Asi nodded slightly, not looking at him.

"I'll get you some water," he said, starting to stand up, but Asi's voice stopped him

"I want to go. I can't stay here," she said, her voice trembling as she got up from the bed.

Alaz's eyes widened, panic seizing him. The thought of her leaving made his heart race. "Don't, please," he pleaded, standing in front of her, his eyes searching hers desperately. He was so close she could hear his heartbeat, fast and unsteady.

"I can't even sleep here. I can't sleep in a place I'm not used to," she said, her voice trying to sound convincing, The real reason was her need to escape the suffocating proximity to him. She needed air, space, something to calm her storm.

Alaz's heart broke, the pain evident in his eyes. Knowing she couldn't sleep with him nearby shattered him. His hands trembled, and he clenched them into fists to steady himself.

"I need you here. By my side. Feeling you here makes me breathe, knowing that you're okay," he said, his voice low and filled with raw emotion, his eyes pleading.

Asi looked at him, struggling with her own emotions. His eyes held so much care and concern, it was almost unbearable.

Alaz took a hesitant step closer. "Look, I promise I'll leave the room so you can sleep peacefully," he whispered, his voice breaking. "But please stay."

"I'm taking a walk. I need a breath," Asi said, moving towards the door. Alaz followed her, a look of desperation on his face.

"I'll take you in my car. You can't walk; it's cold outside and it might rain, Asi."

Asi turned sharply. "Stop pretending," her voice was sharp, cutting through the air.

"Pretending what?" Alaz asked, genuinely confused.

"Pretending that you care. You never cared about me," Asi said, her voice steady, her eyes hard.

Alaz staggered back as if she had physically struck him. The idea that she believed he never cared was devastating.

"Asi, do you really think I don't care?" he asked, his voice thick with hurt.

Asi looked at him, her eyes filled with years of pain. "Did you really give me any other choice?"

Alaz was hit with a brutal realization. She was right. His actions had always shown indifference. He had never said the words, and his actions had failed to prove his feelings. Who was he to blame her for thinking that way? But he had left that version of himself behind. Now, he was trying to be the man Asi deserved, to replace all the bad memories with new, healthy, happy ones, the ones they should have.

"Yeah, that's what I thought," Asi said, her voice hollow. She walked out of the room, heading to the door. Alaz followed her silently. When they reached his car, he didn't say a word; he just looked at her, his eyes silently pleading. After a moment of hesitation, Asi got into the car.
