HOMECOMING was approaching quicker than Jade would've liked. Around the time of every and any school dance, Jade's mother goes into a frenzy. Instead of rice as a side, it's now salad. Instead of chocolate, it's a health bar. Jade's mother was a cheerleader and as the stereotype goes, a popular girl. She'd much rather have a daughter like Katrina.Which she reminds Jade whenever she can.
Over the past two weeks, Katrina and Jade had been hanging out more and more. Katrina took Jade to the mall and while Katrina tried on cute clothes, Jade sat picking at her nails.
Jade's mother handed Jade money for clothes and begged Katrina to "make her dress normally."
Katrina never forced Jade to try anything on or to buy anything. She respected Jade's boundaries with small pushes towards a new pair of jeans or a new pair of shoes.
Jade never had the confidence to wear anything nice or to buy herself anything nice. The nagging from her mother didn't make it easier.
But it was almost the middle of October which meant homecoming. Stupid fucking homecoming.
School dances weren't Jade thing, like every other party or social gathering. Especially not with what happened at Katrina's party. However, Katrina and Sam both convinced Jade to go. Sam needed a wing-man (wing-woman) and Colby would no doubt be hanging out with Caleb the whole night. So out of the kindness of her heart, she agreed to go. Katrina convinced her even further by letting her crash at her house for the weekend to avoid her mother.
Now, Jade's terrible decision was catching up with her. She was being guided around an expensive dress store by Katrina, who was picking up dresses left and right. Katrina had already found her dress to match with Sam. Seeing all the dresses Katrina picked put made Jade nervous for the try on haul.
Jade's mother didn't put a limit on how much Jade could spend. She was half-tempted to buy three dresses just to get back at her mother.
Katrina handed Jade a stack of dresses and shoved her into the try on rooms.
With a lot of complaint, Jade peeled her sweater and shorts off to try on the dresses.
The first three dresses were blue and Jade hated all of them. They were too glittery and too uncomfortable.
The next three dresses were the same story.
Jade was about to try on the last dress when Katrina quickly handed her a dress she had just found.
"This one is perfect, I know it."
"You said that two dresses ago."
"I was lying about that one. I have to keep you on your toes."
"Oh fuck off."
Katrina laughed. Jade slipped on the dress, surprised at how the texture didn't make her want to rip her skin off.
The dress was green. Cliché with her name. It matched her necklace nearly perfectly and complimented her eyes. The dress was v-line, which Jade choose to ignore. It was to her lower thigh, with the bottom being fluffed out. It was simple, but it was pretty.
"Oh my fucking God." Was the first thing that came out of Katrina's mouth. "I told you it was perfect! You're glowing! I can see it on your face. We're getting this."
Finding silver heels was easy, and Katrina ran around looking for makeup and other accessories Jade just followed behind, trying to act bothered but in truth, she was enjoying herself. Only a little bit.
Being able to like how something looks on you was not a privilege Jade had. All of her clothes were intentionally baggy to hide her form. The thought of someone looking at her made her nauseous.
