The rest of the afternoon Luna holds onto Nova, holding her hand as if she'll disappear the moment she lets go. But it doesn't seem to bother Nova as she smiles at her sister, not taking her eyes off of her. Most of the time they spend in silence, not talking. They're just happy being in each other's company for the first time in two years. What would they have to talk about anyway? Roan?
Two years is a long time. I couldn't imagine being away from any of my family for that long. Not when one of them was being held against their will and used to blackmail me. Luna is so strong. Stronger than I gave her credit for in the beginning. She had the strength to deny our mating bond for the sake of her sister. She had to strength to go through with Roans plan just to keep Nova safe. She did all that to keep a promise she made to her parents. A promise to keep her little sister safe.
At least now she had a chance to choose what she wanted for herself. She didn't have to be strong anymore. For that I had my sister to thank. Despite me telling Aurora what I wanted she listened to what I needed. With her rescuing Nova and getting her away from Roan, Luna and I were free to be together. Aurora did that. She did that for me. My sister. I guess she knows me better than I know myself.
'Right, we have to leave.' Aurora says, standing and looking at Luna. 'She'll be safe here with our sisters.' She tries to comfort Luna who just looks at her with horror.
'The four of us need to go back as if nothing has changed. If we don't then he'll know we did something.' I say to her, causing her face to drop.
Luna turns to her sister and squeezes her in a tight embrace before she stands from the sofa.
'Goodbye' Luna whispers into Novas ear.
'No, please don't go' Nova begs her as Luna pulls away from her.
'I have to go, Nova. But you'll be safe here and I'll come back to see you as soon as I can' She says, reassuring her sister. 'Aria and Ava will be with you?'
Novas eyes leave Lunas long enough to look over at my younger sisters. Aria is waiting with a big smile on her face and a hand stretched out for her to take as if they were old friends.
I grip onto Lunas wrist, causing her head to whip around to look at me.
'We have to go.' I say to her as she gives her sister one more look before moving out of the door.
The walk back is long and silent, but eventually we arrive back and hear the faint laughter of Roan and our parent coming from the living room. It's like nothing ever happened as they talk and joke and share a drink before they turn to greet us arriving back.
'Ah kids, dinners in the kitchen.' My mum says to us as her eyes focus onto mine in a knowing stare.
We all walk in to the kitchen, followed shortly by mum.
I look at her and just as I open my mouth and say something she stops me, holding her hand up as she walks up to me.
'Not here.' She whispers to me as she walks out the back door, glancing back to see if I'm following her.
When we're outside she turns around to look at me.
'What... how... When did you find out?' I finally ask.
'Whisper' she warns me as if someone might be lurking in the trees listening to our conversation.
'Mum?' I ask, this time keeping my voice down.
'You might think you've been careful, but it wasn't hard to work out.'
'So Aurora didn't tell you?'
'No. You might think I don't understand, but I was young once too. I also know what it's like to be mated with someone. I see the way you look at her. I'm also very aware of what goes on in this house.'
I let out an exasperated sigh, looking down at my hands. I thought we'd hidden it well enough, but I guess I was wrong. I just hoped Roan was to self involved to notice just like my mother had.
'I can't help it mum.'
'I know you can't. But what I don't understand is why you kept it all to yourself. Why didn't you talk to us?'
'Because dad made it pretty clear he didn't want to get involved. And I didn't want to risk Nova.'
She just looks into my eyes as if she's looking for something else.
'You know you can trust us, right?'
'I know mum, it's not that. I just didn't know what to do for the best.'
'Ok, well for now we're going to act like nothing has happened. With any luck Roan won't think it was us. Hopefully he'll assume the girl just ran away.'
'I don't know. This all just seems a bit to easy. Something is going to go wrong. I can feel it.'
'Yeah, but we can always dream.' She chuckles. 'I better get back inside.' She says, looking past me into the kitchen where the girls are all hovering around eating dinner.
'Do you think everything will be ok?' I ask her.
'Yeah' she says smiling at me. 'I know it will. It has too' She adds before she walks back into the house.
I follow her back in and grab my dinner. Aurora and Echo are off talking in the corner and Luna sits at the breakfast bar, watching me from across the room.
'Thank you.' She says.
'It wasn't me, it was all Aurora.' I tell her unable to take any of the credit.
'I think you sell yourself short.' She says as she stands, walking over to me.
She reaches her hand out, traces her fingers against mine before she hold it. My eyes flick up to her face as she gives me a smile. A smile that makes me want to reach out and touch her. To run my thumb along her lower lip. But before I can she drops her hold on me and walks out the room, leaving me to watch her.
That smile. The way she looked at me. It felt so intimate. More intimate than if I held her in my arms. Even if she didn't say it I knew she loved me. I knew she would be happy. And I just knew my mum was right when she said everything would be ok. If there was anyone out there looking over for us. It had to be ok. I needed more time with Luna. I had to have more time with her.
