Maya is a famous singer who was dating Josh, but then got dumped. A few days later she met Lucas who developed feelings for her quickly. At first Maya didn't return this feelings, but later gave into them. Her legal guardian Shawn had cancer until he died from complications due to it. Lucas gets into a college half way across the country and doesn't tell Maya, because he doesn't want to go. A few days later Maya finds the letter and breaks up with Lucas. After talking with Riley and Farkle she released she's meant to be with Lucas and runs to him only to find out that he's moved away to attend college. The combination of Lucas moving away and Shawn death causes Maya to resort to drinking. Farkle and Riley enter Maya into rehab where she's been staying for the past four months. Josh has been visiting her, but Riley and Farkle haven't been able to see her that much now that Riley's expecting.
