The next day at work, Carmen was talking to this woman which I'm guessing was his girlfriend in the dining room. I think her name was Claire.
Claire looked at me then back at Carmen.
I saw her eyes were somewhat a puffy red. She was wiping her eyes and then the two hugged.
She then left and Carmen was rubbing his hands with his face.
He came back into the kitchen and looked pissed a little.
"Alright chefs let's fucking work!" He yelled throughout the kitchen.
We all worked restlessly and then it was finally lunch. I think I made about twenty cakes today with Marcus.
I took my break behind the building with Carm and Sydney.
"I broke up with her," Carm says as he lights up his cigarette. "Me and Claire are done."
"What the fuck did you do?" Sydney says sighing.
"Yeah Carm what'd you do?" I said as I played in the gravel a little.
"Not shit," he laughed and exhaled smoked.
He flicked some ashes on the ground near me.
"Because," he says. "That shit wasn't really working out. And come on we're just opposite people."
"You two were just walking home together," Sydney says.
"I mean, we have our whole life ahead of so no need to tie down."
"Yeah Carm's right," I said.
Carm checked his phone and cursed to himself. Me and Sydney looked at him with concerning looks.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"Nothing I'm having a guest," Carm says. "You remember that asshole Joel McHale? Like he's a top chef?"
"Ohh yeah I remember him," I said. "Didn't he like degrade his chefs or something?"
"Degrade sounds like a kinky word," Sydney jokes.
"Eww don't make it weird," I laughed.
"Guys," Carm says. "This is serious. He thinks I'm a fucking failure so make sure I look like I succeeded in life and this restaurant. Do that for me please?"
"Sure we're not gonna let you fail," I said with a smile.
I could tell Carm wanted satisfaction from this Joel McHale guy.
After our break was up, we went inside the kitchen and started working.
Carm was walking around with a tall guy whom I'm guessing it was Joel McHale. He was practically towering over Carm.
I didn't pay attention to him and tried not to get Carm in trouble.
"Hey chefs this is Joel McHale," Carm says introducing him.
Everyone greeted him and Joel did a firm nod.
Joel was walking around and stopped at me. He kept walking back and forth multiple times.
"What are you baking chef?" He asked me tapping on the shoulder.
I turned around and looked at him. He was practically towering over me. His cold gaze was making me squirm on the inside.
"Crème brûlée chef," I answered.
He chuckled to himself.
"So this is what you do? Make pathetic desserts? I like it," Joel says to Carm.
Shit I shouldn't have said that.
"But I have a Flaugnarde in the oven," I said.
"Hmm, might have to try that," Joel says.
When Joel turned around to look around, Carm mouthed thank you to me.
"Excuse me for a moment I have a call," Carm says and leaves to the office.
"How long have you been working here?" Joel asks me.
"For a couple months," I said.
"Do I scare you?" He chuckled.
"No chef," I said as I continued working.
I could tell he was stunned at my response.
"You're pathetic," he darkly chuckled.
"Not pathetic as you. You know how pathetic you have to be to come to another man's restaurant to talk down on his chefs that are amazing?"
The whole kitchen fell silent at my answer. People didn't dare to look at me. Joel turned me around and I saw his cold death glaze that could make anyone squirm. His eyes were angry and he had a little smirk.
"What's your name?" He asked.
"Alia."
"Alia you wouldn't last a fucking day in my kitchen. You would've been fucking fired you hear me? Fucking gone. I would've ruined your name in all restaurants in the world including McDonalds. Don't fucking try me."
I silently laughed to myself. I didn't care if he ruined my name. Joel was a fucking asshole and half the chefs knew it. A fucking asshole and pissed I put him in his place. Before Joel walked off with Carm he slipped a piece of paper into my apron and winked.
"See you after work," he mouthed to me.
I thought that was the creepiest shit I've ever experienced. I just got degraded or belittled by someone famous and I back fired. I can't believe Carm put up with this emotionless, rude, asshole every fucking name in the book chef. He was horrible. I felt like nobody ever properly loved or understood him. So he used rich and fame to take it out on someone else. How pathetic. But I'm not gonna lie, Joel was kind of hot when he said that to me. It was kind of like we were in the heat of the moment or something.
