chapter eight:
away from the chaos

madigan hadn't said anything yet, but billie could sense it. every time they met up, she could see the tension building behind madigan's eyes, the way she'd glance over her shoulder when they were out, the stiffness in her shoulders whenever someone got too close.
they were sitting in their usual spot at the café, tucked away in a quiet corner, but it was obvious that even the most hidden spots weren't enough anymore. madigan was trying her best to keep cool, sipping her coffee and engaging in conversation, but billie could see right through it. the furrowed brow, the way her fingers fidgeted with the sleeve of her hoodie—she wasn't at ease.
billie leaned back in her chair, watching her for a moment before speaking up.
"you okay?" she asked, her voice soft but cutting through the small talk.
madigan blinked, her fingers pausing mid-fidget. "yeah, why?"
"you look... tense," billie said, raising an eyebrow. "like you're ready to bolt."
madigan exhaled sharply, her lips twisting into a half-smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "it's nothing, just... everything, i guess."
billie didn't push right away, but she didn't drop it either. she could tell something was off, and it wasn't just the usual discomfort with attention. it was more than that. she could see how much it was weighing on madigan, and the last thing billie wanted was for her to feel suffocated by all the bullshit that came with being around her.
"you wanna get out of here?" billie asked suddenly, the idea popping into her head as she stared at madigan across the table.
madigan blinked, surprised. "like... leave the café?"
billie grinned, but there was a seriousness behind it. "no, like leave all this. i mean, let's go somewhere—just us. somewhere no one knows, no cameras, no bullshit. just... get away for a day."
madigan stared at her for a moment, clearly caught off guard by the offer. she hesitated, chewing on her bottom lip like she was considering the implications.
"i mean... yeah, okay," she said finally, her voice soft but curious. "where are we going?"
billie's grin widened, mischief dancing in her eyes. "you'll see."
a couple of hours later, they were driving down a long, winding road, far away from the city. billie had rented a car—nothing flashy, just something that would get them out without drawing attention—and they'd left everything behind. no phones, no entourage, no pressure.
the windows were down, the cool breeze whipping through madigan's hair as she stared out at the trees whipping by, feeling the weight lift off her shoulders the farther they got from the city. she wasn't sure where billie was taking her, but it didn't matter. for the first time in days, she felt like she could breathe.
