Akshvi didn’t realize when the time slipped from 2 PM to 8 PM. Her fingers were still moving across her laptop’s keyboard, playing with words. Suddenly, there was a knock on her door. The continuous knocking sound irritated her, and she got up from her desk, opened the door, and yelled, “Don’t you understand…”

But when she saw the person standing at the door, her voice caught in her throat. The girl at the door smiled and said, “May I come in, Di?”

“Hmm.” Akshvi stepped aside to let her in.

The girl entered the room and comfortably sat on the bed, saying, “Papa is calling you for dinner.”

Turning back to her laptop, Akshvi said, “Tell her I’ll eat later. You all go ahead without me. I have some work to finish.”

Hearing this, the girl’s face fell a little as she said, “What is it, Di? You always say that. You know I don’t like eating without you. Every day, because of Maa, you break my heart. Fine, I won’t eat either.”

Seeing the girl’s disheartened face, Akshvi left her work and came to sit beside her on the bed. She gently cupped the girl’s face in her hands and, looking into her eyes, said, “Danya! It’s not like that. I really have something important to do. Please try to understand. You’re the only one here who understands me. If you get upset with me too, who will I share my thoughts with?”

Danya’s face softened a bit, but her anger was still evident. Seeing her mood, Akshvi said, “Alright, fine. Let’s have dinner together today. Okay? Now, will you smile?”

Hearing this, Danya gave a small smile and said, “Come on, everyone’s waiting at the table.”

Akshvi took a deep breath and left the room with Danya. As soon as Amrit Ji saw her, he happily exclaimed, “Ah, here comes my princess! Let’s all have dinner together now.”

Nandini made a strange face and rolled her eyes at his words. Everyone sat at the table. They had just begun eating when Nandini said, “So… madam? Did you apply for a job today? Or did you waste the whole day writing those useless books?”

“Maa!” Danya interrupted.

Amrit Ji also chimed in, “Why bring this up now? Let the kids have dinner in peace.”

Nandini smirked and said, “I’m just asking. She made such a grand promise to the landlord. Today is the 8th of the month. In twenty days, which job will she get, and where will she find the money? That’s all I’m asking.”

Lowering her gaze, Akshvi said, “I had something important to do today. Don’t worry, I’ll apply tomorrow.”

Nandini replied, “Important work? These are all excuses to waste time.”

Hearing such bitter words about herself, Akshvi couldn’t swallow her food. Her hunger died within minutes. She stood up from the table and, with a choked voice, said, “I’m done. You all continue eating.”

Amrit Ji tried to stop her, “But Beta, you’ve barely eaten anything.”

Akshvi glanced at Nandini, with a bitter smile on her lips, and said, “I’ve eaten enough, Papa. I’m not hungry anymore.”
