The moon hung low in the sky, casting a silvery glow over the quiet streets outside.
The faint sound of crickets chirping in the garden and the occasional rustling of the leaves outside the window were the only interruptions to the stillness that enveloped the night.
Inside the large, elegantly furnished room, soft golden lights illuminated the warm-toned walls, creating an intimate cocoon of privacy.
The room smelled faintly of roses, a lingering fragrance from the bouquet that had been delivered earlier in celebration of the baat pakki ceremony.
A soft breeze fluttered the sheer white curtains, and for a moment, the soft hush of the wind mingled with the anticipation lingering in the air.
Amaira was thinking of the words and the moments that both she and Rehaan spend tonight.
She blushed thinking about that.
Flashback
Rehaan and Amaira just completed their dinner after their baat pakki ceremony in the garden with their family.
Through the dinner rehaan was continuously playing with Amaira's hands that were kept on her lap. He wouldbe teasing her and again and again caressing her hands with his hands. Sometimes holding them so tight that Amaira could feel all of her belly flattering in excitement and nervousness.
She could not tell that what was happening to her but she was feeling giddy and a need of more of all the attention that rehaan was giving her.
She was feeling so happy that the smile could not just not go away from her face. She was just simply digging her fork and spoons in the plate and acting to eat to hide her smile.
But if that was not enough . Rehaan leaned towards her infrong of everyone and said to her, "Bacha eat properly. You know right I don't like you skipping meals. So ache se khau humara hi function h Sharmao nhi."
And after this act of him embarrassment was a short word for what Amaira felt at the moment with all the teasing glares.
She just wanted to dig a hole in the earth and get swallowed.
Rehaan smirked now also rubbing her left hand which was on her lap with his left hand as they were almost sitting glued to each other.
The dinner after that went with small bickering and conversations between the close family.
Once it was done and everyone was retiring back only the groom's and bride's family was left. The fathers were happy that everything went well whereas mothers were busy gossiping about the relatives. And the love birds could not stop blushing.
Rehaan looked at everyone and went to theri fathers and said, "Baba can I take Doll with me out for sometime? We will soon come back."
The father's duo looked at each other and said while nodding and happy faces, " Don't go much far as you both are already tired you need sleep as well."
The air was tinged with the sweetness of a new beginning, the warmth of freshly exchanged promises wrapping itself around the night. Rehaan and Amaira had just celebrated their baat pakki, the formal confirmation of their engagement, and the house still buzzed with the remnants of laughter, soft music, and the aroma of celebratory sweets.
As the night deepened, the world outside seemed to fall into a peaceful hush. Rehaan, with a quiet smile playing on his lips, gestured towards the door. Amaira’s eyes sparkled with curiosity as she understood his unspoken words. This was their night, the first of many memories they would create together. She slipped out of her heels, letting the softness of the cool night kiss her feet, and grabbed a shawl to drape over her delicate shalwar kameez.
The house had begun to wind down; elders conversing in hushed tones and the younger ones slipping off to bed. With silent glances and light footsteps, Rehaan and Amaira slipped out into the night, their hearts racing with excitement. There was a gentle thrill in this moment—the quiet rebellion of sneaking away after their baat pakki, but with the sweetness of knowing that soon, they would belong to each other completely.
Rehaan led the way through the narrow, winding streets of their childhood neighborhood, their path lit only by dim streetlights and the occasional glow of distant windows. The soft rustling of Amaira’s dupatta as it brushed against her clothes, and the gentle cadence of their steps, were the only sounds accompanying them. The cool breeze, scented with jasmine and earth, swirled around them, carrying with it the unspoken promises of the life they were about to build.
They made their way to a hill just beyond the town, a place they both knew well. It had always been a secret escape—somewhere they had gone as children to dream and gaze at the stars, and now, it felt only fitting to return as they stood on the brink of a new journey together.
When they reached the top, the world seemed to expand. The stars stretched out across the sky in a shimmering blanket of light, and for a moment, neither of them spoke. They simply stood there, side by side, hearts entwined, looking up at the heavens. Rehaan finally broke the silence, his voice soft and filled with affection. "Do you remember when we used to come here as kids, pretending to name the stars?" He chuckled, his eyes flickering with the memory.
Amaira smiled, her face glowing under the starlight, "I always let you name the brightest ones. I thought you'd forget, but you never did." Her voice was a whisper, as though speaking too loudly might shatter the fragile beauty of the moment.
Rehaan reached for her hand, his fingers curling around hers. There was something different in the touch now—deeper, more intimate. It wasn’t just the touch of childhood companions anymore, but of two souls bound by love, anticipation, and a shared future. "I never forgot because they reminded me of you," he murmured, his voice barely audible, yet heavy with meaning.
They sat down on the grassy slope, the world below them fading into insignificance as the night sky above became their only witness. Rehaan lay back, pulling Amaira gently beside him, their heads resting on the soft earth as they looked up. Silence fell between them again, but it was the kind of silence that spoke louder than words, filled with the weight of everything they felt but didn't need to say.
The stars twinkled above, almost as if they were offering their blessings. Amaira rested her head on Rehaan's shoulder, a contented sigh escaping her lips. The warmth of his body beside her, the quiet intimacy of the night, and the endless sky above filled her with a sense of peace.
"I can’t believe we’re really here," she said, her voice soft with wonder.
"Here, now, and always," Rehaan whispered, his lips brushing the top of her head.
For what felt like hours, they stayed there, wrapped in each other’s presence, the stars bearing silent witness to their love. But eventually, the chill in the air and the distant call of reality beckoned them home. With reluctant hearts, they stood, their fingers still intertwined, and made their way back down the hill.
As they walked, the silence between them grew comfortable, filled with the quiet promise of the future. By the time they reached home, the lights inside had dimmed, and the house had fallen into a peaceful slumber. Rehaan paused at the door, his eyes meeting Amaira’s, a smile dancing on his lips.
"Goodnight, Amaira," he said softly, his voice carrying the weight of a thousand unsaid things.
"Goodnight, Rehaan," she replied, her heart fluttering as she slipped inside, leaving him under the night sky once more.
And as Rehaan stood there, watching the stars one last time before heading in, he couldn’t help but feel that they had witnessed something sacred tonight—a quiet, beautiful beginning to forever.
