Cumberland University was used as a training ground for soldiers about to fight in World War II, known as the World War II Maneuvers. The terrain of Middle Tennessee is very close to the battle fields in Europe. Before this, the grounds were a battle field during the Civil War. The Confederate Army under General Joseph Wheeler had burned University Hall to the ground.
Late at night, if you find yourself wandering the campus quad, you might find yourself thrown back in time. The smell of smoke might fill the air as the fog rolls down the hill. Gunfire and screams can be heard if you listen hard enough.
There is a spot between the library and the cafeteria, that if you stand there you might hear the creaking of a tree branch, of a tree that is no longer there. During the Civil War, soldiers camped on the campus. One night, a young boy roughly fourteen years old told his commanding officer that he was scared. The commanding officer said that everybody gets scared, that he will make it through this and return a hero. The boy, afraid to go to war, hung himself by the lowest branch of the tree outside his tent. His commanding officer found him the next morning. Since then, every tree on campus has had the lowest limbs removed.
