The journey to the Astral Stones had been gruelling, but as Amara and Stella stood before the towering, crystalline spires, the exhaustion of their travels melted away. The stones pulsed with a faint, rhythmic light, their translucent surfaces shimmering like frozen starlight. Each step toward them seemed to hum in the air, a vibration that resonated deep in Stella's chest.
"This is it," Amara whispered, her voice filled with awe.
Stella nodded; their golden eyes wide as they reached out a trembling hand. The moment their fingers brushed the surface of the nearest stone, the light flared, enveloping them in a radiant glow. Amara stumbled back, shielding her eyes, but Stella stood firm, their body frozen as the glow deepened.
Then came the memories.
Visions flooded Stella's mind, disjointed and overwhelming: a vast expanse of stars stretching endlessly, a grand celestial council encircled by constellations, and a voice—stern and unyielding—issuing a command:
"The Earth has fallen out of balance. Its corruption spreads. Destroy it, or it will infect the heavens."
Stella saw themselves standing before the council, their voice trembling but defiant. "No. There is still beauty there. Still hope. We can guide them without destroying them."
The memories shifted, flashing forward to their punishment. A robed figure, their form outlined in blazing starlight, spoke again:
"You have defied the will of the stars. For your disobedience, you are cast down, stripped of your place among us."
Stella's body convulsed as they remembered the fall—the searing heat, the unbearable cold, the rush of wind as they plummeted through the atmosphere, and finally, the crash that had left them unconscious in the crater where Amara had found them.
The light around Stella dimmed as the vision ended. They staggered back, gasping for air, their knees buckling beneath them.
"Stella!" Amara was at their side in an instant, her arms steadying them. "What happened? What did you see?"
Stella's voice was hoarse as they spoke, their eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "I remember. I was a guardian star, tasked with protecting the balance of the cosmos."
Amara's brow furrowed. "Then why... why did you fall?"
Stella looked at her, their expression filled with pain and determination. "Because the celestial council ordered me to destroy Earth. They deemed it unworthy—a threat to the heavens. I refused."
Amara's breath caught. "You... you chose us? Over your own kind?"
Stella nodded, their hands trembling. "I believed there was still goodness here, that Earth could be saved. But for my defiance, they cast me down, stripped me of my memories, and left me to fall."
Amara sat back, stunned. "So, all of this... the sickness in the towns, the falling stars, the cults—it's because of that decision?"
"I don't know," Stella admitted. "But if the council wanted Earth destroyed, something must have convinced them it was a threat. And now... now I've weakened the balance. By being here, I've made everything worse."
Amara reached out, gripping Stella's hand tightly. "You didn't make it worse. You gave us a chance. You gave me a chance. We'll figure this out, Stella. Together."
But even as she spoke, Amara could feel the weight of what Stella had revealed. The stakes were higher than she'd ever imagined. And for the first time, she began to wonder if the bond they'd built would be enough to face what lay ahead.
